M1 Garand: horrible rifle, horribly hyped.

I don't consider this post, an obvious troll post, to be worthy of response except to say, if you know where a Garand is sitting in a trash heap, I wanna know!

The Garand's firepower was a significant advantage to American troops in WW2. Wanna talk crap? The Japanese spelled it "Arisaka".

The Brown Bess sucked to, and the Maxim machine gun was to heavy, cannons were single shots, Gatling guns had sucky hand cranks, the peace maker had to be cocked so it sucks to, sharps rifles were heavy AND single shots, Winchester lever actions were hard to reload and didn't hold enough ammo.

OP was definitely just trying to stir up trouble, 99% of the post was incorrect. But, as far out as everything else was, I do agree the Garand is somewhat overhyped. No I don't own one, and I've only fired one in a match once, but at the end of the match I wasn't raving to buy one like they said I would be. I believe history speaks for itself that its a good rifle, I'm not trying to say otherwise, just didn't do anything special for me.

OP, it must be nice to be free from the ravages of informed opinion.

The M1 isn't the be-all/end-all of battle rifles, but it was pretty close in WWII. It was _THE_ reason that the allies won many of the battles that we did. The only other main battle rifle that could keep up with it in terms of volume of fire and was distributed in enough numbers to matter was the SMLE.

Slow to load, hard to mount optics, heavy, possible dangers to the user, can I get an AMEN? What a hunk of JUNK. Who in their right mind would go to war with such a dumb piece of gear?

Which useless hunk of junk were we talking about again?

I'm of a generation that most of my generations Dads including mine and my F-I-L were involved in combat in Europe or the Pacific. Most of our teachers and coaches were WW2 veterans. The Garand to many was revered to a point of a savior. My Dad, many years ago, and I were discussing the Garand and he said the Germans would fire one shot and have as many as eight come back at them. Dad said the sheer firepower simply made the Germans keep their heads down. The Garand also allowed the soldier to maintain his sight picture without having to manipulate a bolt. An American infantryman could reload those eight rounds in almost the time it took the German or Japanese soldier to operate the bolt on his rifle. The Garand was what was called a Force multiplier in that it put more statistical potential hits going the way we're glad they went.

The legacy of the Garand can still be seen in use today in the M-14. A rifle still in common use by our troops in many actions today. Even some of the parts are interchangeable if necessary.

Yes...by todays' wonder rifles the Garand is an old warrior. But myself and many of my friends growing up are here today because that warrior allowed a lot of their citizen warrior Dads to come home standing.

That opening post comes across like Mr. Thermactor ODed on troll pills.

I did basic on the old Garand, back in early 1954. Seemed to work okay. Bought one in 1982. Glass-bedded; match sights. 1.5 MOA with my 48-year-old eyes and tri-focals. Seemed reasonable.

Never did get the dreaded "M-1 thumb". Probably helps to know what you're doing.

Weight? Same as my Wby Mark V when it was fully dressed. Managed many and many a twelve- and fifteen-mile walking hunt with it.

Ah, well. If a person has knowledge and skill, he doesn't feel the need to post drivel.

When you were in Basic in early 1954...so was I...basic maternity ward. :)

Thank-you for your service. Really...Thank-you.

The P-51 was a terrible fighter. I mean, all guns, no HUD, no ejection, completely incapable of radar navigation...

The Katana is a terrible weapon, no accuracy what-so-ever at any range beyond a few feet, lacks optics...

But, the AR guys have shown up.

The thread started as patent trolling so there's no real point to this thread.

To paraphrase the OPs sig - Threads are quite a bit shorter when they're stupid.
