M1 Garand Picture Post
Post 'em if you got 'em!

Finally mailed off my order for a CMP SA Service Grade Garand.
This is my first Garand. I have never even shot one before.
I don't know why I've waited so long to buy one. I have most of the other available mil-surps. I guess it was the higher cost and buying sight unseen, but I finally answered the call of "soon they'll be gone".

But anyway, now I need some pictures to help me through the weeks (months?) of anticpation. If you could specify what grade your rifle picture is, that would help too. Thanks!

Since you asked...

Plain-vanilla Springfield M1 Garand, 1942 manufacture, as purchased from the DCM in 1992 for the usual $165.00:

Same M1 Garand, with another M1 Garand, this time a 1942 Springfield receiver w/new Marlin barrel, as rebuilt at Crane Naval Weapons depot for issue as a Navy Trophy rifle. I have no idea how the DCM got the Navy Trophy rifle, but it's also one of the best $165.00 I've ever spent. Don't pay attention to the oddball 1918 Springfield 1903A1 in the pic, I needed a third stacking swivel and had loaned my dad the third M1 Garand in my collection:

Which reminds me, I have to go ask Dad if I can have M1 Garand #3 back one of these days... ;)

Mine...got from Jim Thompson the author. Finest weapon I have ever fired. Garands forever!

Springfield Armory, 1943 receiver, '51 barrel.

The bayonet is also SA from 1909, and family heiriloom!

My dad (born 1938) went to the Merchant Marine academy on long island when he first went to school. However, in one semester he earned more demerits than most cadets earned in four years and left after that :p

Anyway, they used to march with those old bayonets on "pershing" rifles he said, until one day someone higher up said it was too dangerous and made them toss all the bayonets into a bay. At high tide. That night they went out and retrieved all the bayonets, he gave two of his away to friends and kept this one. It was in our apartment in NYC all through my years growing up, since we didn't shoot this was that secret "weapon in the closet" that I would sometimes sneak a look at and swing around. Now I keep it with my other militaria such as my German grandfather's Iron Cross and other such things, and finally have a rifle I can put it on :D

*edit* I know the sling is on backwards, I just got the rifle that day. Don't worry, I came in third place in the match I shot on sunday, third match of my life too! (though I was using an AR-15). I know how to use this sling properly now!

Steve in PA, you have a real nice set-up there. I'm jealous :)

Oh, nice Garand too!

5 digit serial number Springfield. Looks like it was Rearsenaled at RRAD in 64. I got it from CMP a few years ago.

CMP service grade US Springfield 1944, original barrel. My pride and joy.....after my human kids of course....:D

With a username like Exposure you think I could up with something better than this!

But I just shot them now with my cheapie camera, sorry.

Closest to the camera is my Collector grade H&R which I believe to have never been fired. She is still in the cosmo that was on her when I opened the box from CMP. I can't bring myself to take that nasty old cosmo off, part of me believes it is from the mid 1950's. I always said I wouldn't own a gun I wouldn't shoot, but well.................. what can I say? I just like to see it in the cosmo! The pic does this rifle no justice, not even the buttplate has so much as a single scratch. In the middle is my Rack Grade Springfield, oh what a shooter! Anyone who got on the wrong end of a Garand was going to have a very bad day indeed. And the rifle farthest from the camera is one of the "reproduction" Garands put out by Springfield Armory. For all of the massive amounts of negative press I have read on these I absolutely LOVE mine. She has thousands of rounds through her now without a hiccup. And if my Rack Grade is a shooter, then this baby is a tack driver. Unreal accuracy out of this beauty. Never fails to draw lots of attention at the range.

And just for fun here are my 3 Garands along with my 1911 and Reising Model 50. I just love firearms with some history behind them. Those of you who dislike the reproduction Garands can keep your comments to yourselves! :neener:

FYI, The CMP website says that Service Grades are sold out. Field Grade and Rack Grade are still there.

Also, all 1903 rifles are sold out. They mentioned some returns that might go up for sale, but that was all.

M1917 rifles: only rack grades available.
