Hi all,
Just some info about the old type of M1 Ball ammo. The old type had a major problem with a fouling the gas trap rifles. In 1938 and 1939 Orndance order a change in 30.06 ammo. Ordnance came up with a new type of ammo to help with some of the problems that the old M1 Ball had. This new ammo was M2 Ball and it not only work very well in the M1 Garand but in all types of 30.06 Cal. weapons. Field Service stated that the old M1 Ball was to be issued for machines guns. During this time frame M2 Ball was used. After much testing with powder and case changes M1 Ball after a certain Lot Number was again for issue for 30.06 Caliber weapons. Remember, this was going on until about 1940 before all the problems were worked out by Ordnance as WW2 was going on in Europe and we would soon be in it. Ordnance worked around all these problems to get the M1 Garand Rifle up and running.
I hope this data helps.
