M1 Op Rod Dismount
Assuming we are dealing with USGI parts, it might also be a bent Op Rod.
You can test that. Take the trigger group out of the stock. Take the barrel and receiver group out of the stock. Remove the spring (from the operating rod) and follower arm.
The test. Hole the receiver with one hand and the muzzle end with the other hand. Tilt the muzzle up 30 degrees slowly. The weight of the bolt and rod should drop the bolt to fully open with the Op Rod contacting the front of the receiver. If it drags and does not open the Op Rod is likely bent. It would be very unusual for a bolt to be bad.
Likewise by tilting the muzzle down. The weight of the bolt and Op Rod should close the bolt. If it drags, the op Rod is likely bent.
Solution: new USGI operating rod.
I also agree with the previous post that wear on the Op Rod could be the problem. It would have to have a lot of rounds through the rifle with poor lube to do that.
