Gentlemen

We know that the first Order for M1 Garands from Winchester called for 65,000 M1 Garand Rifles. The contract W-852-ORD-4622 had a "Supplement #5 to the above contract" called for more M1 Garands to be added. The date of this file is Nov. 18, 1941. The US was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. How many more Winchester M1 Garands were called for in this Supplement ??

Have fun with this one.

My Guess

Clancy,

Although this supplemental order was weeks prior to Pearl Harbor, we certainly know the Roosevelt adminstration was manipulating pre-ware intelligence..... *oops* A small joke there.. :)

In short, the bubbas at the War Department knew war was imminent. My guess is that Winchester was asked for another 90,000 rifles.

Gentlemen,
johnmcl thanks for your comeback. It seems like you and I are the only ones interested in this type of history.

The answer to this quiz is as follows:

Supplement # 5 called for an additional 60,000 M1 Garand Rifles from Winchester. The Order started on 6/15/42 with the first shipment of 6,009 M1 Garand Rifles and ended on 12/4/42 The cost was 83.71 dollars per Rifle.

Have fun with this one.

Inflation Effects?

Clancy,

I'm not much of a finanacial type, but what would $83.71 in June of '42 be worth today? I'm interested in how that compares to CMP prices. :)

Keep up the quizzes, even if its only you and I...

John

johnmcl,
There was a site that did just that You could put in the amount then and it would tell you what it would cost today. I don't have any address on it.
Thanks again
Clancy
ps a guy on another site put this in:

That price is equal to $1020.95 in today's dollars
