I have a plan to buy my wife a revolver this weekend. I bought my daughter one last weekend (threads located here on THR), & when I give it to her I also want to surprise my wife with one.

Some of this is repeat; mentioned in the threads about getting my daughter a gun but here goes:

While I could get my wife the same gun I bought my daughter (NIB 637-2) - the dealer has more & gave me a good price - there may be better choices. I really don't belive my wife will carry. She may place it in the car when going out sometimes; getting it to & from the car won't be an issue. I'd like to convince her to place it in her purse when she goes out on her motorcycle alone; but even then her time off the bike (when she has to shoulder her purse) would be limited - as it would if she were out in the car & it became disabled. This will be more a nightstand gun, & I'm thinking a slightly larger revolver might be a better choice.

I think a 3" M60 with fixed sights would be ideal - too bad S&W doesn't produce it :banghead:

That said, I'm considering the following (loosely in order of preference & NIB):
  • S&W M60, 2" BBL
  • TAURUS M85 (SS), 3" BBL
  • S&W M64, 3" BBL
  • S&W M64, 4" BBL
  • S&W M10
The M60 would work although we'd load it with .38SPL +P.

The 3" Taurus M85 is also a consideration, I currently own a PT940 & used to own a 2" M85 in blue. I don't know that my wife would recognize the Taurus name as she would Colt, S&W, or Ruger though.

Moving up in frame size, the M64 with a 3" barrel might also work, while petite to a degree her hands aren't tiny (she's shot my 6" 686 without much of a trigger reach issue).

The M64 with a 4" barrel might be pushing it - in the event she'd have to carry it in a purse for whatever reason (although my wife carries some big purses!)

If I did decide to go with a 4", I'd also consider the M10.

To my question: what are the street prices I should expect for a NIB? Has anyone made a recent purchase of an M60, M85, M64, or M10, or kept an eye on prices & can offer some guidelines? I've been out of the buying loop for a little while (college tuition gets in the way), so maybe my impression is wrong but it seems like some of the prices on Gunbroker & Guns America are higher than what you see in the display cases at the local retail outlets. Previously, I used those prices as a guide when shopping, adding something in so the small local guy can earn a living. If I do that now, in some cases I'd be paying over MRSP.

Any help is appreciated - I really want to do this over the next few days & surprise my wife when she gets home on Sunday.

A good new price on a M10 is now over $400, with a 64 about $25 more - and the 67, the adjustable sighted version, more again. Another consideration would be a 619 - a seven-shooter .357M - or it's adjustable sighted sibling - it tops around $500. They would be more utilitarian - capable of .38 poppers to real .357 Magnums - and with an extra shot - at only an ounce or so more than a M10.

One way to get an idea on prices in your area is to use the locator at Davidson's. Look up what you want, then put in your zip code and it will bring up several folks in your area and what they will charge you. You may also find some folks that don't have regular stores. I found a guy that works the gun shows and from home, and he always has the lowest prices.

M60 has a blue version -the 36 that was available with a 3" bbl. Great gun with pointability and longer stroke for ejecting shells. J frame size.

I am a huge fan of the K frames with 3" bbls, blue Mod 10 in .38spl or its cousin the 64 in steel, are great dedicated .38spls.
I would suggest these over the J frame size for less perceived recoil, and depending on hands, stocks make a gun fit...I'd try a set of Eagle Secret Service for instance for something different.

Locales often determine prices, some areas run more than others...sad, but true.

Many of these may still be found as Used Police trade ins. Exterior may have some wear, internally pristine as carried lots - shot little.

Good Luck!

Do you have to have NIB?,one could save
a good amount of money by buying used.
By buying used you might open up a few
more options.BTW my last 2 revolvers
i've cost $500.00,a used M-60-7
ladysmith that has tighter lock up than
my new 642-2.The 3" M-10-7 i bought is
in great shape but it does have some
wear in the blueing. Here in the local
Sportsman Warehouse a NIB 3" M-64 will
set you back $450.00 so one can save
tons of money by buying good used
revolvers instead of new.

Stainz, I considered the 619 - but it is an L frame & I think that might be crossing the line on size. Also, I'd really like to stay with a 3" barrel. I might go to 4" in a K frame - but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I do appreciate the input though - especially on pricing. Thanks!

Steve, I have no problem buying a used gun, & if I can lay my hands on a pristine revolver with box, etc., I'd pick it up. But as a gift for my wife, I really don't want to hand it to her in a paper sack. (Especially after her daughter, my step-daughter, opens the NIB 637 I bought her. It might hinder the domestic harmony around the house for a while....:uhoh: )

Also, I'd prefer to stay with a SS frame. As with the 4" tube, I might go with blue if the deal is right but it isn't my first choice. The 3" M64 may win out over the 2" M60. The only reservation I have is that at 33 ozs, I don't believe she'd ever want to put the M64 in her purse. Not that she would do it that much anyway, but the option would be pretty much removed. There's only $11 difference in MSRP so that probably wouldn't even come into play.

I hadn't thought of the Davidson's angle - I'll have to give it a shot from home tonight. (The corporate Network Nanny won't let me get to it - I'm surprised I can still get to THR from here).

Forget the 4"

If you're trying to get her to carry, forget the 4". It's just too darn big for everyday carry.

I like the THREE inch model 60. I've seen it for $509.00 to 535.00, NIB.
