M14 - What length 1907 Sling?

Anyone know which "length" of 1907 sling would be closest to right for someone who 6'2" and has average length arms? (M14 Full size)

It's adjustable, that's what all the little holes are for. Unless you need some sort of extra-long sling, just move the hooks in and out until it fits you right.

LOL . .yeah, I know it's adjustable. I've got a couple of Turner's in the safe . .but they offer them in 50,52,54,56 . .I'm thinking a 50 is the right one but I don't want to plunk down $50 and get the wrong one.

Shooting? Carrying? Etc.

Turner's are great, but may I make a suggestion? (O.K., I'm going to, just being polite).

How about one of those oversized square leather keepers. I first saw them at Thunder Ranch where Clint Smith had one on his little Ruger .308. He had Tony at Milt Sparks make it--it works great.

You can slide it out for a carry sling, including scramble carry, and then draw it up tight once you get into sitting, prone, what have you. I'll see if I can find a link thingy.

I think I have a 54" Turner on my M1A. I am 6'5" and it fits fine. I would opt to have a couple extra inches than to run out of room prematurely.

Recommend you get the 54". For AR's, 56". The All Weather Sling is quite a bit stiffer, and a 56" might be what you want.

My lengths are bases on shooting Highpower matches inside a shooting coat. That adds to the width around the bicep.

Thanks guys! I wanted it primarily to shoot the various high power positions that allow it. I can't shoot worth a damn but I sure have fun trying to improve.

I really like my tan M1907 I got from Fulton Armory for $25. However, I have not used a Turner or Les Tam so I don't know if those ones are worth the extra money or not.

I can't see how you could go wrong by buying a longer length sling- its easy to deal with too long on a 1907 sling, but too short is useless.

For $27.95 it should be more than an overpriced carrying strap.... but it isn't. Any 1907 sling that sells for less than $40 US is usually a "cheap" sling.... cheap price, cheap quality. You get what you pay for.

Thin leather with holes that tear out, thin bendable frog hooks, keepers that are BUTT sewn fer cryin' out loud. One good day at the range in a tight sitting position and the holes start to tear out, the main strap begins to stretch, the frog hooks begin to straighten out.... and if you are lucky... the keepers pop....

Ask me how I know......

There is a real reason to pay the price of a GOOD quality leather sling if you intend to use it as a marksmanship enhancer like it was intended to be. Turner makes really good leather slings, Les Tam makes the BEST leather slings.

I own a box full of Turner slings, and I have handled Les Tam slings. Both are good.

I have been using one Turner 54" sling since 1996. I have replaced the keepers once.

Since Turner came out with the All Weather Sling, I bought two of those. I bought two 56" ones because they are always stiff, the 54" leather ones stretch a bit, but not these polymer ones.

Turner was on the USMC rifle team and saw a need for a decent shooting sling. He is an example of the best of the American "can do" attitude and has built his small company up by hard work, better ideas, and taking a risk. I think he was the first to offer 54" slings, numbered holes, and heavy duty leather and heavy duty keepers.

Then he saw Gurney straps, and a light bulb went off. He had to go out on risk to buy expensive equipment to cut and punch holes in that stuff, but he started the All Weather Sling phenomena. And I expect that mine will outlast me by several generations

Mr Turner is at each Birmingham Gun Collector's show with a table of fabulous gun leather.

52 or 54" - depending on how long your arms are (average vs long). I would get the 54" as you can shorten up if needed.

i do like the turner all weather sling. i have 2 of them (used to have 3). i shoot it on my long range guns, but i can't get in and out of it fast enough to shoot across the course, so i stick with leather.

I told Turner the same thing, that the AWS was hard to get out of. He rolled his eyes and said "you were unhappy because the leather slings would not stay put and now you are unhappy because the AWS stays put, what do you want? "

Well he was right. Darn shooters want it all.

However, I have found that a light coating of Baby powder allows me to move my AWS sling keepers, even while I am in position.

There may be a better idea. Let me know.

Someday I hope to be a good enough shot to know the difference between a Turner and a Tam. I have a brownells "NM" sling on my .308 boltie and it is exactly as swampy described . .really soft leather, not made as well and it will stretch like crazy in the shooting positions I'm able to obtain.

seriously, the biothane/aws stuff with a creedmore shooting jacket stays put. it's goin' nowhere! where you goin'? nowhere! </boondock saints>

i didn't want to do anything to make it move easy as i figured then it would be no better than the leather. so i just deal with it in the long range matches where we have 30 min block times for 20 rnds.

A Les Tam isn't really that much more than a Turner. Mine was only $69.
A really good thing about them is that either you call him or he calls you, he asks a few questions, then comes up with almost the exact right length for you.
And it's made exactly how you want it.

One year, at Perry, I was squadded next to a female USMC Rifle Team shooter. She had a customized Tam sling. Les had stamped USMC and the Eagle, globe and Anchor logo on the sling. It looked real cool. She was proud of it.

Les is a class act. He truly does make all custom slings. Custom length, color, hole numbering, etc... He also stamps initials, years, service insignias all at no extra charge.

AAMOF, he generally will not make a sling for anyone until he's spoken with them via phone to find out exactly what they want. Sorry.... no e-mail orders-instructions. At least that's the way he used to operate. Don't know if he's changed modus operandi or not.

Lot's of guys in this neck-o-the-woods who shoot Highpower swear by Les's handiwork..... me included. I own three of his slings.

Also, I sent him an information request through his website and he called me the next day.
There are some situations where he'll make a sling without talking to you on the phone, but generally he'll talk to you on the phone before starting on it.
