I was at the local pawn shop this morning and ran across a 1917S&W .45 ACP revolver. It is used condition with some pitting, barrel looks fine, trigger is smooth. Asking price is $249. Thanks for any input, I appreciate it very much.
Fine finish a better shooter does not make. If the bore and chambers are good (often they aren't) and the action locks up tight and it is properally timed that would be a flaming deal. Used guns usually sell according to how they look - the newer the better. Thus I have gotten some great buys simply because of nothing worse then cosmetic problems.
The price on the 1917 has gone up quite a bit in the last few years, the one you saw is a steal providing it's in good operating condition. That's assuming it's US issue. Look for the flaming bomb on the left near the hammer and US marks on butt. If it's a Smith-made Brazilian contract piece there will be a Brazillian coat-of-arms on the side plate. Still a good buy for a shooter.
Great Price! Buy it before you have to beat Old Fuff, XavierBreath, and ME away.
Seriously if it's mechanically sound it should shoot great, and it's a great price; who cares what it looks like! My post war M&P has a few rust pits and the typical holster wear, but I dare say it's one of the sweetest shooting revolvers I've ever handled. The looks helped me land it at a good price. I think you'll really enjoy that old Smith.
Went down this morning and gave it a closer inspection during a break at work. It appears to be a S&W made Brazilian 1917. Barrel is pit free and appears in excellent condition. Mechanically everything was fine, only pitting on the frame. Got it and two sets of full moon and half moon clips out the door for $257. Thanks for all your input I really appreciate it very much!
