I was in the local pawn shop this morning and ran across a very nice blued S&W M-36 .38 spl. snubnose, pre-lock. The Jim March test confirmed it was mechanically sound and the barrel was bright and shinny. Finish was almost like new in the box. Asking price $379 out the door. Thanks for you input, I appreciate it.

Many times the price of used guns depends upon what you are comparing the price to. For example, a new Model 36 is offered by S&W in its "Classic" series for $735 MSRP blued. So you would be paying about half price for a gun that is arguably as good.

One member here recently posted that he just paid $140 for the same Model .36 (2" bbl. square butt) that I paid $289 for last summer.

I recently saw one at a local shop for $495 in like-new condition. So $379 sounds fair, if not a spectacular deal. I think that pre-lock Smiths will increase in value if they are clean. Buy it.

And, last fall I paid $379 at my LGS for a 36 like the OP described. Like Disclaimer said about his purchase, I consider it fair.

that is a good price as long it is in good shape and has not been refinished keep a close eye on old smiths and check your lock up and the flash holes in time, cause you dont want to turn around and pay a gun smith to tune it

A key here is you said it is about NIB. That is worth a large premium and $379 is about $100 to $150 below the market for that. I say a 37 ANIB sell this week for $510 ($550 "otd" to be equal), and sold myself a 60 ANIB last month for $500 "otd." I would by that in a heartbeat at that price and condition. If you don't like it, you can at a minimum get your money back and a little bit. To me, it would be a real keeper, especially if the butt is round, the barrel is pinned and the box is cardboard and not plastic.

I went back this morning and it appears to be Model 36 3-screw frame, pinned 1-7/8" barrel, RB, and nice factory stocks. I put it in layaway. Thanks for the input!

Now your only tough decision is to leave it shiny in the box, or carry it in a pocket. A nice Chiefs Special can be a great little carry companion. One of the all-time best. You found a nice deal!

Agreed~!

The Smith & Wesson J-frames lead the field in small, concealable, lightweight
handguns. Even at 19 ozs, the S&W model 36 has long since been held in
high regards by police officers, security officers, and John Q. Citizen alike.
I have owned many myself, and even tho' I cherish my collection of old
Colt 2nd series (1947-1972) D-frame Detective Specials; I come back
time and time again too the original Smith & Wesson "Chief's Special"
as a 2" .38 Special carry gun~! ;) :D

Well speaking of Colt Detective Specials about two or three weeks ago I put a nickeled one from the same shop in layaway as well. Passed the March test with flying colors. Barrel and finish were in very good condition. The grips were original but showed some dings and chips, otherwise the gun is in good to very good condition. I have that one for $349OTD and the S&W for $379OTD in layaway. So my gun $$$ is tied up for the next few months. Thankfully my wife doesn't say a thing about my gun buying as long as the bills are paid and there is money going in the savings account monthly. :)
