Need to tear down the bolt and remove the extractor to use my chamber gauge to build up some reloads. I CANNOT FIND MY M1A BOOK. Does anyone have a link to somewhere that has the info to tear apart the bolt? I think I remember how to get the op rod off and remove the bolt, but need some help getting the bolt apart.

A trick I learned from a member of this board is to use a fired .30-06 case. By chambering the case as far as it will go (it will obviously not chamber fully), you can take the tension off the extractor spring. You will then be able to drive out the extractor from bottom to top.

Basically the ejector needs to be in far enough to allow the extractor to come up and out.

I take the bolt out of the rifle, push down the ejector with a spent case and then lever up on the extractor with a large screwdriver. Be careful all the spring loaded parts don't go flying.

I reverse the process for reassembly, which is harder to do because you have to get everything lined up under tension.

M14 Cleaning Rod/Tool Handle

The issue M14 combination tool (cleaning rod handle) is designed to take the bolt down. The M1 handle will, too, but the M14 tool is better. You can find them online (Fulton Armory has them for $14.95, http://www.fulton-armory.com/ ) and at yard-sales nationwide...

yeah make sure you watch a few online videos first so you know what youre getting into before you rip that bolt apart. if you dont shoot your eye out in the process you will make up various swear words trying to reassemble while crying your eyes red. the combo-tool mentioned above is a must

OK I do have the combo tool and may try that later. But I will try it in the stock first using the 30-06 case method first. It is a very tight bedded M21a5 and a real PITA to put in and take out of the bedding.

Definitely try to avoid taking it out of the bedding. The Shootist Monks tell you that removing the action from the bedding degrades the integrity of the mating. Kind of like popping its cherry, I think... But the less you mess with it, the better your accuracy will remain.
