I know this has been done to death, and I went through some old threads. Now that deer season is over, I want to get a .308 for next year's season and some February hog hunts. I already have a scope and and M1A (norinco). With irons at 100yds I can do 3 round groups about 1.5". Biggest problem is when field hunting, I end up with 2-300yd shots, and I can't even see the grey ghosts with the wooded background even at 100 yards at low light and the irons. I can with my scoped 4 power 30/30, but I don't take those shots with that rifle, and want to un-scope it and make it my woods gun only. I don't want to spend half the cost of the M1A to scope it. If those are the only ones available worth having I will save up and buy a bolt. I would like to hear from guys who have tried the cheaper alternatives, the leapers/utg styles, maybe even the forward rail mounts with a normal scope and what their experiences are. I would humor anything under $100. Over that and I think it might not be worth it to me. Thanks for all comments please let the flaming of the cheap mounts commence!

I don't know if they are still made but the "Basset" mount that bolts into the receiver hole has worked well for me on my Polytech. It doesn't offer much choice in scope mounting position and is a bit higher than I'd like, but leaves the irons ready for backup use.
I tried one of the aluminum Leapers mounts, seemed solid enough with its "three point" arrangement (had to remove the stripper clip guide) but it seemed to cause stovepipe ejection failures (seemed ammo related) but the real downer was it never held zero, the "ears" that mated with the grooves on the side of the receiver deformed under recoil and never seemed to settle in with further tightening of the side bolt.

The Bassett mount has a lot of positive reviews, and I believe its still being made. Google it and you should be able to find their website. The ARMS mount is a good one too, I just saw one on a forum classifieds (don't ask me which one) for $105 in just the last 2-3 days. Probably 95% of the Springfield Armory reviews say these suck bad. But these are aluminum, which don't seem to hold zero worth a darn. Defineately go with a steel mount. Best bet is to keep watching several different forums' classifieds and you'll come up with a good deal. Greg
