Anyone here use thier M1A/M14's to hunt with? ( Hogs/deer/etc...)

If so, then........

1. What model of M1A/M14 do you use? ( 16/18/22 in bbl lengths for example)

2. Iron sights, or optics

3. If optics is your game, what kind of mount?

4. Rings, and type of scope?

5. What kind of ammunition do you use?

6. What kind of terrain do you use it to hunt in?

7. Longest successful shot? Average distance from target?

8. Hunt from a stand, or do some walkin?

9. Anything else you would like to share in regards to using your M1A/M14 as a hunting rifle?

Deer here,
1. M1A Loaded
2. irons
5. Federal 165gr. Barnes tsx
6. New England
7. around 250yds, generally around or in 100yds
8. Stands are for fatties and bow hunting, IMHO.
9. I got the walnut stock; but for 20 bucks picked up a GI synthetic that i put on for hunting...it's lighter, but not as nice looking.

M1A? Are you KIDDING ME?!

Why would you ever use that kind of thing for hunting??

Use a FAL instead. :)

The M1A is a heavy rifle to be lugging around all day long on a hunt. I bought a Remington 700CDL in .30-06 for hunting.

The M1A is a Loaded with Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 scope and Harris swivel bipod and comes in weighing around 13-14 lbs. The Remington is closer to 7-8 lbs and just as accurate.

But, he HAS the M1A for whatever reason, so why not use it? (oops)

I took my brother's M1A Loaded out hunting once, and only once. It got awfully heavy when hoofing it all day. Other than the weight, it's well suited for hunting and if I was going to go sit in a stand, I would take it with. Perfect caliber up to Elk, scoped or iron sighted according to preference, fast follow up shots, and accurate to boot.

M1A is great for hunting. will take anything down. i just bagged a 70lb skunk that was eating on my friends hog feeder. here are some pics of the kill. i was down in south texas this december at my buddies lease. he told me that he was putting steroids in the corn and the skunks were muchin' on it. my FMJ .308 stopped the skunk cold. i did have to put a double tap in it's brain-pan with my P22 to stop it from twitchin'. next time i will use soft tipped ammo for better ballistics though.

i forgot to mention that the shot was from a seated position at 200yds with wolf ammo and a non magnified aimpoint. go aimpoint!

Very funny! What's your skunk's name?

My ex-wife used my scoped M1A to take a deer at probably 100 yards. She made a bad shot; it was too far back in the abdomen but she put the bullet right through the abdominal aorta so the deer died quickly.

There is no reason not to use an M1A but all of my deer have been taken with either an Encore or Contender.

1 M1A loaded stainless in GI fiberglass stock
2 Optics
3 Smith Enterprises Mount
4 Steel Rings from TSR, Leupold VariX II 3x9
5 Federal 165 gr or Nosler Partition
6 Western Oregon coastal mountain range. Lots of thick evergreen forests and deep canyons
7 50 to 200 meters
8 All on foot many miles a day
9 It's a heavy beast. I hunt deer and elk. I go to a .300 Sav Mdl 99 when I get tired of lugging it around.

glockman19 : What kind of mount are you using?

3rd Gen Scope mount. It has not lost zero in over 1,000 rounds. I like the ability to use the iron sights.
