Hi,
My m24/47 safety seems to be permanently stuck in the left position. I was able to get it into the middle position to take the bolt apart by pulling the sear lug back, and flicking it to the middle. I was wondering if the safety getting stuck is a common problem, and if anyone has experienced it would you be able to tell me how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had that problem. What you can try is: when you attempt to push it from left to middle, put your thumb all the way to the front of the safety lever and pull up and back. This helps dislodge it and it should come out. After I did this a few times (back and forth between left and middle), the safety turned on more easily. Maybe you just have to "break it in." :)

Sounds like one of two things. Either your bolt is full of cosmoline and needs to be cleaned or the safety needs to be fitted to the striker tail piece.

Don't remove any metal from the safety itself. All fitting is done to the tail piece part.

I cleared some cosmo out of my bolt, and oiled it, but it still did not work. I also tried the pull back and up method which also did not work. Thanks for the suggestions though ill keep searching around for a solution.

Fit and taper of the safety seems to have been an issue on M24/47 and early M48. There are a handful of dimensions whose tolerances have to agree to allow the safety to easily pickup the cocking piece. USUALLY, increasing the taper on the safety is all that is required, BUT you need to reassemble the gun without the safety, and inspect/measure the gap between the cocking piece and the bolt shroud with the gun at full cock/bolt fully closed. If this gap is not visible or too small, you may have sear ledge/trigger sear tolerance issues. I will try and post a drawing when I can get one scanned.

I reassembled the bolt without the safety, and the gap was visible. I did a side by side comparison of my safety with the gap and am thinking of increasing the taper on the safety. Could you please explain what you mean by sear ledge/trigger sear tolerance issues? Thanks for the help.

I believe Mr_Pale_Horse was pointing out the possibility that your trigger sear which holds the cocking piece in the cocked position, may have tolerance issues (worn) which may include the cocking piece itself, at least at the contact points.

As you mentioned, with the gap visible, probably a touch with a grinder or belt sander to create a more favorable angle on the safety, will probably take care of the problem. A little at a time will do it.

Yes, NCSmitty characterized my concern. A worn cocking piece and/or sear is a more serious problem, but if you are seeing the gap, then proceed as Smitty stated, frequently trying it for fit and funtion.

Just filed down the taper on my safety and popped it in, works like a charm. Thanks for all the help.
