The M44 stock will have a groove routed along the right side just forward of the rear leaf sight for the bayonet. The M38 does not have one and can't be fitted with one.
The M44 has a permanently attach folding bayonet and the M38 does not. If the rifle has a bayonet groove in the stock but the barrel has no bayonet or bayonet lug, it's an M38 that was restocked with an M44 stock. A buddy of mine has one.
