I've read Jeff Cooper's book "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth." I found the scout rifle concept fascinating. Does anyone think using a Russian milsurp Mosin-Nagant M38 or M44 as a basis for a scout rifle would be doable?

Hi Spartacus,
I've turned my M38 nagant into a scout and it is actually my favorite rifle right now. I just took off the rear sight and drilled and tapped so i could put a mount on it. (I believe it was for a Mini-14). I also chopped my barrel and recrowned it which actually improved its 'handiness'. I would also reccomend looking up Brownell's and getting a new bolt handle, those straight bolts are a bit rough to work quickly! I havent yet put on a recoil pad,but they are a very worthwhile investment.
I would try searching the forum, you'll get a lot of info on scouts in general and on turning mil-surps into scouts. Take care, and watch your six!

ps- Nice tagline, it was a good scene

Darrel's Scout Scope Mount

Hi, I'm new to this forum,

You can get no drill and tap scout scope mounts from Darrell's. I have one on my Swiss K-31 and it works just fine. I just mounted one on my M38 but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Getting ready for the hunting season with load development and and shooting my rifles to insure they are all properly working. See the following web site:

The one drawback to the Mosins as a Scout rifle is their safety. I've had an M44 set up as a scout, it was quick and quite handy, but that safety is difficult to work at best. I did set up an M38 for a guy who uses it to hunt, but only hunts from a stand and doesn't load until he gets to the stand. Kinda defeats the purpose of a scout rifle in the first place. I don't own one of Darrel's mounts (I used B-Square mounts), but I have seen them and know a few guys who use them, and I doubt you could find a better mount for any money.
