It has been my understanding that the Maddi made AK is among the best built AK's available today. I picked one up yesterday and over all it seems to be very solid and it must be dependable after seeing how dirty it was and still firing. First thing first I am a clean nut, I can't stand to see anything dirty or lacking maintenance. This one does in fact have Maadi and made in Egypt stamped on it along with importers mark. Points about this one is lack of the bayonet lug and threaded tip of barrel for muzzle brake. Hope it lives up to its reputation.

Congratulations of your new rifle!

It has been my understanding that the Maddi made AK is among the best built AK's available today.

I've heard a lot similar statements recently, often from sellers. The Maadi's reputation was really built on the pre-1989 import ban, Steyr-imported rifles, which were some of the first AK-style guns available in the US (the Valmet had been sold here since the 1970s) and the truest in form to the Russian AKM. These rifles retailed for $995 in 1984 and still command a high price.

The Maadi's halo began to fade with the importation of Chinese, Hungarian and Yugoslavian rifles, all of which were better made. The final blow was in the late 1990s with Century Arm's Maadi MISR/10, which were cobbled together in the US from Egyptian recievers and Chinese parts kits.

Maadi's aren't imported any more and the reputation of the later guns has gotten confused with the preban guns. Most of the post-ban rifles are completely functional and perfectly fulfill the many roles that AK-style rifle have in the civilian world. But in terms of quality they aren't anything particularly special.

That said, your new rifle will still be a hell of a lot of fun. Enjoy it!

Mine is sitting on the workbench as I type this .
Getting ready to straighten the crooked front sight post.
Rifle has always been a reliable bullet hose, we're gonna see if we can fix that!
Mine is a PARS International import if that is important to anyone. no lug, undersize muzzle with the threads turned off.

the maadi misr 10 and misr 90 are the ones with low reputations due to century building them. that and lack of maadi parts.

the original Steyr import misr and the century misr s/a are the good ones.

misr s/a are all maadi except for the trigger group. Century Arms got around the Treasury ruling by importing them without trigger groups. without the trigger group parts it was imported as a parts kit not as a complete rifle. Once in the US trigger parts were added to comply with 922r law.

Interarms makes their "AKM" style build on Maadi parts kits...they're supposed to be pretty nice. Frankly, since we never see rifles in their original configuration, I think the builder in the US often has more to do with the quality (though obviously some starting points are better than others).

I worked on a contract in Egypt for 16 months starting in Dec 1978.

Common soldiers had the crudest AKM and AK74 (5.45mm) rifles you ever saw. Not just poor condition, but poorly constructed and finished. Many were Egyptian manufacture (some were Russian and other imports leftover from the Russian era when the Aswan dam was built), all had the u-shaped stamping. Stocks were crudely carved by hand and dipped in varnish. That was fairly common among many north African army units from Sudan to Morroco, not just Egyptian military.

But in Egypt there were several units of elite guards, usually assigned sentry duty at embassies and other sensitive (or strategic) facilities. They had their special black helmets and uniforms and they were real soldiers, not sad sacks wearing 30-year old coat and pants. All carried 7.62x39 AKM automatic rifles, and those rifles were very very nice. Very nicely crafted, beautifully finished, and carefully maintained. Those guys were proud of their weapons.

So some Egyptian AK import parts over the last 5 decades may be very good, and some may be crap. I guess all depends on the original parent source.

First thing I did was to run a 20 round mag and it was flawless. Second thing after getting home with the AK I stripped it down and cleaned it. It must be a very dependable gun because of the grime that was built up and it still worked. After going over the weapon about the only thing I can see that needs to be done is remove the crappy finish and have it re-blued or parkarized or just a coat of flat black paint. The finish that is in question is not that large of an area but its one of those things that will automatically draw your eyes to it. Unless someone comes up with one of those ONCE IN A LIFETIME Deals this one is here to stay.

Century tarnished the Egyptian Maadi name with their MISR90 abortion. But dont get me started on Century... :banghead: :fire:

I have a Pars import RML 16" and I love it. Matter of fact most people who shoot it and are into AKs are impressed with the quality/accuracy. Problem is they arent flooded on the market like other imports.

At a gun club picnic several years ago, a member laid his legal full auto maadi out on a bench and invited anyone with ammo to fire it. By the end of the day, several thousand rounds were fired out in 5-10 round bursts. It never stuttered.

im glad i read this, almost bought a maadi masr10.was gonna trade my xdm9+$100....good choice?

Maddi Update

Ok its been a little while coming but at least I can give a fair range report on the Maadi. Very accurate even for my old eyes and shaky hands, feeds every type ammo I have in stock. I even went full hog and purchase the Slide Fire for the AK totally expecting a disappointment. Some how I have had the ablility to count rounds being fired close enough to hit within 1 or 2 rounds of actual count. However after putting the Slide Fire on either I was concentrating hard on control or it was firing too fast for my simple mind. Only issue I had was the hand guard/furniture was difficult to maintain a firm grip in order to put the forward pressure to make it work. Fixed that today with add on grip by Magpul Angled fore grip. Did this make a difference, will have to tell after I get back out to test fire but it does make holding onto a lot easier. Glad the 7.62's are cheap and at the Slide Fire web site there is a warning that says " WARNING', Uncontrollable Smiles". And yes it is very hard to keep that silly grin off your face.
