My question is, if I were to buy one of those semi auto only MAC10s that dont have stocks and are sold as pistols and then bought one of those elongated jacketed barrel shroud extensions, if I attached it would this be illegal or legal? I mean would it make it into an SBR? Or what?

If you don't put any buttsock on it, then it's still a pistol.

Add anything resembling a buttstock it's an SBR.

Add any kind of vertical forward grip and it's an AOW.

Adding a shroud to the barrel usually isn't a problem but I'm not sure what type you are describing.

It would be legal unless there's state law preventing it. (I doubt it in VT)

What you can't do is put a stock on it, unless the barrel (not a fake suppressor or shroud) is over 16" because that would be manufacturing an SBR. And you can't have a vertical fore-grip on that shroud, or you're manufacturing an AOW.

thats weird... but it explains why you can buy an Uzi, MP5, or S&W M76 thats semi auto only with out a stock as a "pistol"
