made some custom grips. what do you think

it was some scrap kitchen counter material from my work. its like a plastic fiberglass composite.

the originals were snapped in half. i had to buy or make new ones no matter what.

What sorts of tools did you need for the project? I have been extremely frustrated in shopping for grips for my short D-Frame Colts (I'm a bit of a princess on this issue, and very little of what I found online is "just right") and have thought about trying to make my own.

hartmen

Pretty decent looking. How difficult was it working with that particular type of material?

Recognized the material right away, looks like Corian also called solid surface polymer, stuff is brittle so don't drop your gun, it won't chatter but will bruise badly turning it white.
Works just like wood with files and sandpaper, you can go with increasingly fine grit moving on to wet sanding for a high shine, you can stop sanding wherever you like the finish and depending on how much you handle it, it will naturally polish up, you can get a matte finish using scotch-brite pads (red or white) green is too coarse.
I installed solid surface counter-tops for a living for many years and had some of this material sitting around for a long time but never thought about using it this way.

took me about one hour of labor to make. tools used

1. drill press to drill mounting holes
2. jig saw to rough cut shape out
3. 90degree angle grinder. small type with 1 1/2 pads.
4. tons of different types of sandpaper
5. clear coat rattle can. just for extra protection

while building i dropped these little things alot. never had a problem with chipping.

super easy for anyone to do. i recommend breathing mask when using high speed grinders. ear plugs and saftey goggles.

I imagine they're not heavy enough to bruise, if you get more pieces try the sanding with the wet/dry, if they're black they'll shine like a dark mirror.

Not to bust yer balls, but you did ask, "what do you think".
IMHO, your workmanship appears from that photo to have been very good, but the material used is about as butt-ugly as imaginable. :neener:
Seriously, why not get ahold of some walnut or something, and give it another go? You seem to have it down, you could probably find a furniture manufacturer locally to give you some usable scraps that I'm confident you would use to really spiff that pistol up.
