A few days ago, I took delivery of a magazine bag from Cheaper Than Dirt (CTD) which is
The mag slots hold either 20- or 30-round mags. Forty-round mags will also work; the bag just can't be closed.
In addition to the features in the quote above, the bag has an internal peg-and-loop closure security flap that covers the top of the mags to keep them in place (and maybe a little cleaner).
There are also a couple of 2" belt loops on the back of the bag so the bag can be worn on a belt, or more likely with a waist strap, in conjunction with the shoulder strap, to minimize bouncing during movement.
As mentioned, one of the exterior pockets will hold a 20-round box of ammo. The other pocket is thinner and longer and I haven't decided what to carry there.
With five 30-round mags in the bag, one 30-round mag in the rifle, and a 20-round box of ammo in the side pocket, you have a combat load of 200 rounds at your immediate disposal.
The bag's shoulder strap is rather thin and narrow with a flimsy looking metal buckle but the strap and buckle can be easily replaced. I will also use some type of waterproofing substance on the bag because the cotton material looks like it will absorb water like a sponge. Not a problem for the Chinese military but one that I prefer to minimize.
When the bag was removed from its plastic bag, it felt damp and had a mildew smell. I put a piece of charcoal in each mag slot and hung the bag outside for two days in the sunshine. This removed both the dampness and the smell.
Inside the top flap is some writing in Chinese that probably says "Property of Chinese Government." However, if anyone can tell me what it really says, I am interested in knowing that.
The bag cost $7.97 plus shipping.
