Magazine scraping?

Sorry I have a lot of questions, but I had another one I forgot to about. Occasionally when feeding and ejecting magazines they will not easily move in and out. Inserting a magazine, they hang up before they lock into place. Pressing the release sometimes the magazine will only drop about a half inch and stop, catching on something. They are catching and I cannot for the life of me figure out what they are catching on and how to fix it. Here are some pics. These are on the front of the magazine. One of them is an original 7 rounder, the stainless is a brand new factory 8 round mag (as in not even a week old). The new magazine is already developed a "slot" on that side where it is scraping. Any help is appreciated.

I'm guessing that is a Sig 220.

The mag hanging up when being inserted isn't a huge worry, it is hanging up on the mag catch...you should be shoving it in with some force. You can wait for it to smooth out or you could call Sig and see what they are willing to do for you. They might tell you it is normal (it pretty much is), they could send you a new mag release (not too likely) or they could have you send the gun in for service.

Some questions, when you press the magazine release to drop a mag:
1. are you pressing and then releasing the mag release?
2. is the magazine full or empty?
3. is it after you have chambered the first round?
4. does this happen regardless of how many rounds are in the mag?

It sounds like you're not holding the mag release down long enough...it isn't a switch, it need to be held down long enough to clear the tube...either that or the top cartridge is moving forward after you chamber the first round

1. Yes
2. Either, happens in both cases.
3. Nope. I will happen with completely empty mags with no rounds chambered, or full mags.
4. Yep.

I thought that at first it was due to bullet feed (noticed it during a reload drill), and I usually insert mags with plenty of force, but sometimes they wouldn't lock. After looking at it for a bit, occasionally it wouldn't release cleanly from the catch and was scraping on something inside and had to be physically pulled to get it to come out. I dunno what else is in there besides the mag release. Should I replace it?

You might be releasing the mag button too soon and causing it to drag.

If the gun is new, I'd send it back to Sig and have them adjust the mag catch...I'll bet you it just has a high spot on it.

If it isn't new or you just don't want to send it in, I'd take out the mag catch and take a look at it...smoothing the contour, being careful not to change angles. If you have a friend with a 220, I'd switch them to see if there is a different feel to them. BE CAREFUL if you take the mag catch out that you don't put it in upside down...it can get stuck and have to be drilled out, you can destroy your frame if you don't do it correctly
