I've had good luck with this older Savage in .308 but the muzzle lift seems excessive. A local smith told me the stock design causes this more than actual recoil.

I loathe the appearance of muzzle breaks. Magna-port advertizing appears to match my basic needs here. But before spending any money, I thought it best to seek advise from this forum.

I'm not concerned about ruining collector value.

Do you think Magna-porting will significantly reduce muzzle jump?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have an 18" 45-70 that I sent off to Magna Port and had them cut the trapezoidal cuts into the barrel. It definitely reduced the felt recoil and some of the muzzle jump. Don't forget one thing, it is going to be significantly louder. Since my rifle is different than yours, I am going to guess and say that muzzle jump would be reduced but mostly the rearward recoil more than anything. I am glad that I sent mine off though as I can now make fast follow up shots if needed.

A .308?

It definitely is the stock design. A long gun that fits the shooter tends to recoil straight back, and a .308 isn't that harsh.

Ask if there's something the gunsmith recommends doing with the stock. Proper stock fit doesn't make the gun louder.

May I ask why you're trying to reduce muzzle jump? It's a hunting rifle, so follow up shots are not needed. Even if it did reduce muzzle jump, I wouldn't want that extra sound blast in my ears in the field.

Your local gunsmith ought to be able to install a muzzle brake, that will help with the jump and the recoil. Nothing against Magna-Port, they did a great job on an O/U I use for clays. My smith makes his own brakes, but there are some out there for purchase if he does not want to build you one. I liked the fact he matched the contour of the barrel. But beware, they increase the noise.
