I have a 5-10 RCBS beam scale and I am wondering if the magnetic Dampening Magnets can go bad after years of use because it is a Magnetic dampening scale. I have cleaned them with alcohol and I have leveled the unit and set it at zero, but when I bump the end of the needle arm is doesn't always go back to zero, sometime it sticks maybe one or two marks either above or below zero. Then if I bump the needle arm it again it will return to zero most of the time. That is why I am wondering if the magnets can weaken over time? Guess I should be asking RCBS Customer Service at this point, what do you think?

Almost certainly not the magnets. Look at the pivots for the beam. Are they worn or dirty? Check that first. Even if the magnets were completely removed all that would do is allow it to oscillate longer, not effect where it came to rest.

The pivots and knife edge of the beam that sit on the pivots . Make sure all are clean and the knife edges sharp ... no flat spots . The beam sticks and a finger touch on the beam will free it up .
RCBS might recondition it for you or maybe they (RCBS) has a DIY video showing how to recondition the beam / pivots / knife edges . Magnets don't usually wear out ...but you can ask them about replacing those while you are fooling with it .

Isn’t there a link to a very informative thread about this topic in the reloading wisdom thread pinned to the top of the forum? Pretty sure the OP has been advised to read that thread several times, including recently when he was asking about buying a scale.
I guess it won’t hurt to rehash this subject yet again but it seems strange to take all the time and effort to pin these long threads just to have them ignored time and time and time again.

The old pre-internet saying applies here—why spend an hour doing research when five minutes with a librarian will do. We’re librarians.

The librarian doesn't tell you the answer; they tell you where to find the answer. In this case, it seems GeoDudeFlorida is the librarian. The OP has been told a few times where the book is with all the answers, but he seems to want the librarian to read it for him.

The lonely ones would read the answers.

It’s not a problem to assist new players to the game, gun guys are enthusiastic and like to help.

Why bother creating extensive documentation and pinning threads? They just get ignored and the same old mis-/dis-/information is repeated again and again. I don't object - that's not my place - I'm just pointing the OP - and anyone else reading this - to the extensive library of wisdom already gathered in this forum. No skin off my nose if it just keeps getting ignored.

Why is it a problem to either answer the question or just scroll passed it? Why spend time on unrelated posting, criticizing members? Showing one where to find an answer is by far the best answer, but nuttin' to get upset about if your suggestion is ignored (how many "XX primer vs. YY primer" threads have you seen in the last 2 years?).

Absolutely correct to point a guy in the right direction, some guys get a bit frustrated but I’m kinda like you, just try to help.

I’ve removed all of the pinned threads, they’re not even visible to click on anymore in my browser.
It’s tiresome to constantly scroll past threads that I’ve already read.

Sorry for not searching out this forum for my answer. I guess I deserved being berated about not doing my research. I downloaded everything that Project355 said concerning the scale and I printed out 12 pages for further reference and I will read it at my leisure if that is OK with those who like to do the berating?
