Oops. When I sold off some "excess" primers last spring, I let my CCI standards go because I thought I had a bunch of WLP on the shelf. Turns out those were WSP, so I'm low on large standard pistol primers, but I have a lot of CCI large magnum pistol.

I guess if I'm going to load any target rounds with HP-38, they're going to have to be sparked by the magnums. I'll certainly use the starting load for .45 ACP. I use a .44 S&W load for the .43M target ammo anyway.

Anyone care to predict whether the SDs will be better or worse with the hotter primers? Assuming I get my chrono back into action...

Any time there is a change in components, do another load work up. You will be OK starting a new load with magnum primers. BTDT many times. I have used many magnum and small rifle primers in small pistol applications, no "formula", just started a new work up...

Winchester LP is for Std or Mag load so there may not be much difference.

+1.

I did an informal primer comparo with IMR4227 in the .45 Colt... CCI standard primers, WLP's, and CCI Magnum primers; as far as velocity, that's how they stacked up... CCI standards showed the lowest velocity, WLP's in the middle, and the Magnums on top, but it wasn't a huge spread or anything. I didn't record SD or anything.

.43magnum? That’s a new one on me. o_O
Some guys who prefer the .45 Colt to the .44 Remington Magnum make a BIG freaking deal out of 23 thousandths of an inch, so I jokingly/honestly/mockingly sometimes use the term ".43 Magnum." edit: To clarify, I'm not mocking either cartridge! Just people who are a little too devoted to one of them.

When I made up some .44 +P loads following recipes in Handloader #265, I labeled them ".434 Casull."

Okay. Inside joke. Gotcha.

I've called it the .429 Magnum before...

I'm considering developing a cartridge, a new, powerful cartridge for handguns... called the .429 Magnum. Interestingly, it's design and tech specs are quite similar to the .44MAG, but I'mma put that new, tricky name on the front... it has to be better, right?

Standard primers will be fine for W-231 in any caliber.

The OP has a plethora of Magnum primers, however, and that's what he wants to use. I don't know that I've ever used a Magnum primer with a powder like W231, however; I'd be curious to see the results.
