magnum primers

I cannot find small or large pistols primers anywhere. Out of "desperation", I bought small and large pistol primers for reloading my 9mm, .40 and .45 caliber bullets. The guy from the store said it was safe to use but just to back down on the powder. Presently I am using WInchester WST 5.0 gr for the 9mm. Generally, how much of powder should I decrease using these magnum primers? I am not looking for match grade accuracy. These bulletrs are used for plinking. Thanks THR.

Ok just looked to see where you stand with 5.0gr of WST, but you don't list a bullet weight, also I don't see any data on Hodgdon's site. Personally with not Seeing published data for that combo I would start over at the start charge per your data, and drop maybe 5%. Usually a good rule of 5-10%. WST is a fast burning powder. I just did some testing with CCI Sm Mag Pistol Primers in 40s&w, 180gr Berry's plated bullets, and 3.8gr of WST. These rounds were all with in 5fps of this same load with CCI Sm Pistol Primers. In this case I didn't reduce my charge because I'm already below the recommended start charge of 3.9gr. Always remember anytime you change a component start over and work back up.

The last time around-2008-2009, I could not find small pistol primers anywhere. Especially at a fair price.

My local Gun Club had a large stock of Remington 6 1/2's-Standard Small Rifle primers.

I ended up loading up some Mid-range loads in .38Spl, 9MM, and .40 S&W with these Small Rifle loads with good success.

I KNOW that this is NOT a recommended practice, but for ME, this has worked out when Small Pistol primers are not to be had...Bill.

Note: This should NOT be tried with Large Primers-Large Rifle primers are taller than Large Pistol primers..

I'm guessing you left out the word magnum for the primers you bought. Magnum primers will not create a nuclear explosion, they will burn a little longer and a little hotter than standard primers. As with all changes you make in a load recipe of course you should rework the load dropping back the powder charge and working back up. In the end you will probably find a difference of only .1gr to .2gr to generate the same velocities.

Hey, finding magnum primers is better than finding no primers at all...
