Regular or Magnum Primers in .44 Magnum?

I try to buy Winchester LPP for the versatility of their mag/non mag use. If they are not available, I will try to buy magnum primers from the other manufacturers which I use for everything rather it requires a magnum primer or not.
It does not make sense to me why a mag/non mag primer even exists, just make the things universal and other than the actual primer size you are good to go to touch off whatever powder you are using.
I'm kinda surprised after all the talk that based on military and consumers we don't have just spp and srmp. And even srmp might be ended with just military spec 41s being available. I wouldn't mind using srp in my 357 loads but a 41 series primer would likely have ftf with my tuned actions....

Hi...
I use magnum primers in my .41 and .44Magnum handloads using 2400 and Unique powder and have done so for decades.
My chronograph shows a slight increase in velocity over standard LP primers. Accuracy doesn't seem to be affected much at all.
I will say that my Unique handloads with magnum primers seem to burn much cleaner than they do with standard primers.

I do not load my cartridges to the very top book maximum power levels with Unique or 2400. In fact, I stay below the book maximum loads with H110/296 as well.
Those few extra fps in velocity are not worth the extra wear and tear on my N frames or my Virginian Dragoons, BlackHawks or Dan Wessons for that
matter.

I have reloaded a whole boat load of 44 Magnums and 44 Specials (my most favorite and most reloaded cartridge for a bit over 25 years). CCI were the most common so I used them in my 5, 44 magnum guns. I only used magnum primers with 2400 and WC820, and IIRC some AA #9. But not exclusively. Waay before I had a chrony but accuracy was consistent with either standard or magnum primers. No squib or "puff loads". If I used 4227 or H110/W296 I would probably just use magnum primers (reports of "detonation" and magnum only pressures, less latitude with loads), but I don't have records of using those powders...

When ever a component is changed, do another load work up. No formula, just start over.

I use standard Win. large pistol primes with all powers except H 110 or W 296

Me too for hand gun cartridges.

Full full power 44 Magnum, I use W296/H110. I use it in several other full power cartridges like 357 Magnum and 410 bore shot shells.

But, for the most part, I load hot 44 Special loads in 44 Magnum cases with powders like Unique or Accurate #5. I use standard primers here.

Just because the cartridge has “Magnum” in its moniker does not mean that one has to use Magnum primers. It depends on the powder.
