this is probably a stupid question and a pretty straight forward answer but with the new Magpul angled forgrip (AFG) does this still break the rule as for adding a virtical grip on a pistol based from the ak/ar platforms?

i know its a wording issue as its an angled forgrip and not a virtical forgrip but i wanted to know if that was enough to be legal?

i highly doubt it but wanted to know if anyone had a 100% answer

also i never asked but is a bipod a problem on this same type of gun? if not what about the grip pod?

It isn't specifically addressed, but that would make it clearly for 2 handed use, ie SBR...just get the stamp.

Also, trying to skirt the ATF on a technicality due to some vaguery in the wording is playing with fire, IMO.

Don't know about a plain old bipod though. I see them on TC pistols all the time, so they may be legal.

AAHHHH yeah i forgot its not the grip thats in the wording its the "for two handed use" thanks soulless i know there was something i was missing

Nwilliams, that's good that they can be used...

Until someone else at the ATF gets an email asking about them.

Could be right.

Perhaps someone can contact Magpul and find out their official stance on the matter. I don't own an AR pistol so I have no interest in taking the time to contact them myself about the matter. Although I would be curious as to what their response would be.

I suppose you could contact the ATF as well if you were so inclined.

Call and ask and reference the letter. Put the pressure on them right off and let them do the stuttering. If they say OK, get your own letter. :)

When Magpul released the AFG, they said (@ the SHOT Show) they had contact BATFE about the legality of installing it on a handgun. Magpul has yet to state what BATFE's response was or if they responded at all.

Magpul's stance isn't going to keep anyone out of jail.

Post #6 sheds some light on things, though.

Ruger Charger pistol comes standard with a bipod.
Just thought I'd mention that.
BATFE has stated in the past that a bipod on a handgun is good to go and does not make an AOW.

The question is does an angled forward grip fall in the same category as a vertical forward grip or is it something else (like a horizontal forward grip), which the installation on a handgun does not create an AOW.

So far, there is one BATFE letter stating an angled forward grip on an AR15 Pistol does not make an AOW.

But, does this also mean that it also applies to other types of handguns or is it specific to the AR15 Pistol type handgun?

I've seen the ATF letter before about the AFG being legal to install on a pistol, and I'm pretty convinced they made a mistake when they sent it. I don't see how they can square that opinion with the "logic" of their longstanding opinion that a VFG on a pistol makes it an AOW.

ATF has long held that by installing a vertical fore grip on a handgun, the handgun is no longer designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand. Therefore, if individuals install a vertical fore grip on a handgun, they are “making” a firearm requiring registration with ATF’s NFA Branch.

If I were going to do it, I would get my own letter, not depend on one I found online.

OK so this is a no BS answer. I called the D.C. branch of the ATF and spoke with them about AOW/SBR routes for me to go on a collapsing VFG. I asked him what about a Magpul AFG and he said he would have to do some research and get back to me. The next day he called back with the GREEN LIGHT on the grip saying they passed this a while back. Dont believe me call for yourself. I kept his office and cell number in case some one wants to try to be supercop at the ranges.

I have one on my Kel-tec PLR-16.

This is recent letter that came from the ATF, I copied this from a similar thread on another forum.
