Major Screwup

Last night, I went to a gun show in the area looking for grips and a spare magazine for my Kimber CDP. Found a guy that sold dozens of styles. Settled on a pair of Ajax cherry with finger grooves. This would make up for the flat mainspring housing, which I'm still not quite used to. After installing them, I reloaded the pistol and flicked on the safety. This morning, it was on me when I went to pick up breakfast. When I got home, I decided to clear the weapon. I COULDN"T GET THE SAFETY OFF! I thought sure I cycled the gun a few times last night, but evidently not with the grip screw fully tight. The under flange of the ambi safety needs to move under the grip, and this is not provided for with the quite generic officer's style grips. Spent a good half hour with a fine file making a groove about 1/16" deep and 1/4" wide on the underside of the grip. Works fine now, but that could have been a disaster. Scared hell out of me.

Screwup

Hey hey Stevie Ray!

That's a very minor screwup. Now, if you'd played around with a long link
to tighten the vertical lockup...shot the gun until the link pin wallowed
the hole out and delayed the barrel linkdown to the point of shearing the
locking lugs off, THEN you woulda had Double Trouble. The pistol wouldn't be your Pride and Joy any more...and you'd have to go ask Little Sister for a loan to get it fixed. Things like that break my Rhythm and give me the Blues...How 'bout you?

Major screwup? Nah. That was on a Minor scale.

It would have been a major screw up if you had needed that gun to function properly in a life or death situation! Always check for proper function when installing any new part, even stocks. By the way, unless you are left handed, I think the ambidextrous safety is a solution in search of a problem. I have never had a use for them and have little confidence in them. Man, am I ever getting opinionated in my old age.... and I not that old!!!

Some people don't shoot 1911's right handed.

I had a similar situation with my Smith and Alexander thin micarta grip panels, and fixed the situation with a dremel in about 3 minutes.
