Man accidentally killed by friend on camping trip
Tony Bridges, Florida Freedom Newspapers
Tuesday November 13th, 2007

Two longtime friends from Panama City Beach, on a weekend camping trip to Gulf County, accidentally set off a pistol Saturday, killing one and wounding the other.

Jayson Decker, 31, died at the campsite. James Cook was treated and released from a local hospital.

Gulf County Sheriff Joe Nugent said the men had set up camp on the bank of the White City Canal earlier in the day. At about sundown, Decker picked up a loaded 9 mm pistol and tossed it to Cook.

Cook caught it, and the gun fired. A single bullet passed through his left hand and struck Decker in the head, killing him. Cook ran to a nearby boat ramp to call for help, Nugent said.

Deputies called a crime scene unit from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to examine the scene. The evidence matches Cook’s account of the shooting, Nugent said.

Nugent declined to provide other details about the shooting.

“We’re still investigating all that,” he said. Robert Decker, Jayson Decker’s father, said Monday the gun did not belong to his son or Cook. They might have taken it along to test fire it as a favor for an acquaintance, he said. Cook could not be reached for comment.

Decker’s father said the two men had been close friends for several years and worked together in the maintenance department at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort on Front Beach Road. They also lived next to each other in trailers in the Lagoon Oaks neighborhood.

“(Jayson) was well-loved by his family and friends,” Decker said. “He enjoyed life and loved hunting, fishing, motorcycles and fast cars.”

He said Cook is distraught over the shooting. “It’s devastating to me and my family, and it’s devastating to him as well because he has to live with this the rest of his life,” he said.

Jayson Decker leaves behind an 11-year-old son, Joel.

It's sad, but I'd sure like to see video to explain how the hell they managed that......the description in the story just seems unreal.

Never try to catch a dropped gun! One of the best ways for a ND with no control over where the muzzle is pointed. Most any modern, quality firearm will not fire if dropped, and the few that do, only fire if it lands on the muzzle -- the maximaly safe direction in such a situation, although richochets can still be very dangerous.

Playing "catch" with a loaded gun is Darwin Award material. Sorry for their tragedy, but what is wrong with people?

Um...Darwin.

Stupid should hurt.

something is wrong here... a bullet thru the hand into the head? sounds like he was pleading, arms outstretched for his "buddy" not to shoot him...

guns don't just go off. am I crazy, or does his story sound hollow?

Agreed, it SOUNDS sketchy. But, knowing my luck... I could see that happening to someone.

But on the other hand... who throws pistols at people?? Superman would repeatedly get shot in the chest, but as soon as the gun got thrown at him out of frustration, even he would duck out of the way.

Sounds to me like you are reading it wrong. The bullet through the hand was not the person shot in the head. The person shot in the head was the one tossing the gun, the bullet through the hand was the person trying to catch it. That's quite possible if using two hands to try to catch it, one catching it by the trigger, and the other hand somehow ahead of the muzzle.

Ok, so as the rest of the folks chalk this up to Darwinism:

RIP, The man who died prematurely due to the accident.

May the other man live as peaceful as possible, having killed his good friend.

A one time slip does not mean these mean were the dumbest people on earth. I'm sure their families are in great sorrow.

I forgot what forum am I on?

really guys, some man has to live with killing his best friend and you guys call him an idiot removed from the gene pool. but oh wait, he's not, he had a son. now his son grows up knowing that his father was killed by a gun(note: gun not person) and a mother lost a son, and a wife a husband. caused by carelessness? possibly, the details where thin.

but who cares, its just one more idiot in line for a darwin award.

While this may not have been the smartest move in the world, i dont believe it qualifies for a darwin award. Even the smartest people sometimes have a momentary lapse in judgement, and unfortunately this one ended up in the death of a friend. I feel sorry for the guy that caught the gun, having lost a good friend, and having to live beside his friends house and watch his son grow up without a father all because he tried to catch something a friend tossed him. I think the man has and will suffer enough without us judging him.....

I fault the man who died much more than the man who was expected to catch the pistol. It's a gut reaction to catch something thrown to you. He could not have know it was loaded, heck he may not have even realized it was a pistol until he practically had his hands around it depending on the circumstances.

I must say I am a little disapointed. This is the high road yes? The guy makes a mistake and his best friend is now dead. Good to know all of you have never made a bone head move. Show a little compassion.

Actually, the guy who made the mistake, throwing the pistol, is the dead one. Hence, the Darwining.

You can get back to me on that one when I start throwing firearms around.

Looks like I had some of the facts incorrect. Bottom line. There is a guy who now has to live with his best friend being dead and a kid with out a dad. Yea...that seems like a good excuse to poke fun.

You do not have to throw a firearm to have a bone head move with one. Glad to know you handle your firearms with care.

I hate to say it because he had a kid who is fatherless now but this is "natural selection" folks.

Like people who buy 1000+ cc racebikes and ride them around without a helmet...

+1

I'm usually the first one to chime in with a Darwin award joke, but this one just ain't funny to me.

Now the guy changing his tire with 00 buckshot...

I'd say I kinda feel sorry for the guy who caught it.

The poor shlep may not have had much say in the events as they unfolded. His idiot friend who threw it caused the whole thing. It sounds to me like his parents should have hit him more.

I do feel sorry for the catcher, since he shot himself and killed his best friend due to the actual firearm owner ignoring firearm safety.

I re-read the OP and withdraw my statement... my tinfoil hat was sliding down over my eyes.

everyone has lapses in judgement, they vary in severity and consequences.
