A man who was robbed at gunpoint after pumping gas turned the tables on the gunman, police said, disarming the robber and then beating him with his own weapon.

St. Louis police said the incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday outside the 7-Eleven at Gravois and South Jefferson avenues.

"He's a hero as far as I'm concerned," a police officer familiar with the case said of the robbery victim. "He said he wants to be a police officer and said he hopes this incident doesn't hurt him. I told him it won't."

The robbery victim declined to be interviewed.

The man identified as the disarmed robber, Michael Jackson, 19, of the 4000 block of Cook Avenue, was charged with first-degree robbery and was in satisfactory condition at a hospital.

Police gave this account:

A man, 24, had just gotten gas when another man with a gun approached and demanded money. The man in the car surrendered some cash, but the gunman began screaming and demanded more.

The victim told police he thought the robber was going to shoot him, so he fought back.

The two struggled and the pistol fired, but neither was shot. The robbery victim wrested the gun away and hit the robber at least twice on the forehead.

Police arrived to find the robber unconscious. The gun, which had been kicked away, was stolen by a passer-by.

It's that last sentence that worries me the most

The gun, which had been kicked away, was stolen by a passer-by.
More common than you'd think. Odds are, the "passerby" was a buddy of the perpetrator, and the gun will be back in his possession the day he gets out of the pokey.

The instructors at a couple of the classes I've taken have said that it's better to pick up the gun (yes, even though you'll get your fingerprints on it) than it is to just leave it lying where it is and take the risk of someone walking off with it.

Protecting the evidence is your job, until the police get there. You're going to need all the evidence you can get when it's time to deal with problem 2.

Especially in this case Pax, since he already had his fingerprints on it from where he thumped the BG with it.
I would have been worried about him coming to before the police arrived.

Wow, i thought this was a joke
Michael Jackson?
what a coincidence!

Nice job with the disarmament, whoever you are!

"gets out of the pokey".............I think he has to get out of the hospital first. :p This is great stuff. :D

A dirtbag tries to commit a robbery.......gets disarmed & beten unconscious by his intended victim. :) :D That rocks. I wish it would happen more often.

Like a scene from "Tombstone"

Too bad the perp didn't have a S&W M29, Colt Python or a Desert Eagle:
the head-thumping would have taken him out for good:evil:

I agree that the victim (and for you bleeding hearts out there, that is NOT the guy who got bashed over the head) should have maintained control of the weapon. The criminal (that IS the guy who got KO'd) could have had buddies in the area who may have picked it up and tried to help him.

Other than that, I say good on 'im!

Didn't Jackson's atty say it's all for the money?

More seriously, this would be robber should stay home and watch sesame street. He'd be a lot safer if he did.

Does the VPC or HCI or any of those other institutions of stinking thinking keep statistics regarding bad guys who have their weapons taken away from them by law abiding citizens?
