A Fort Collins man was sentenced to five days in jail and a year of probation Friday for sending threatening e-mails to Tom Mauser. Mauser is the father of a Columbine shooting victim and head of a group that advocates tougher gun laws.
Darren Michael Morrison, who pleaded guilty to a harassment charge on May 1, was also ordered to serve 60 hours of community service.
Morrison, 44, was accused of sending e-mails to Mauser starting in December 2006 threatening to kill him. Prosecutors said he also threatened to shoot down a plane at Denver International Airport.
Prosecutors described Morrison as a gun-rights activist. They said he made the threats under the name of another man in hopes of getting him in trouble with federal authorities.
Mauser's son, Daniel, was among 13 people shot to death at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.
Mauser is president of the board of Colorado Ceasefire, which advocates stronger laws to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and prevent accidental shootings.
