Man shoots finger in PD HQ during permit process

since when do you have to bring a handgun in for "Inspection"? What do they inspect?

They are inspecting the serial number to make sure it matches their paperwork. It's an end run around to "registration" is all.

Oh man

I don't know about all this inspection stuff but one thing for sure. I wouldn't want to be the copper sitting behind the counter waiting for people with guns to walk in through the main doors. Loaded or not.

Ah, good old Nazi County.

So can any Nassau residents tell us what the backlog is for obtaining a premise permit nowadays? 6 months, or is it more now? And how much money -- over $500 yet?

I had a purchase letter in North Carolina before I even had an apartment!

So long, suckers!!! :neener:

What's a purchase letter? Who needs a letter to purchase a gun?

Strange... baby steps out of New York?

:p

The local sheriff's blessing that you can go buy a handgun. $5 per letter. As restrictive as it might sound to you, coming out of New York, it felt like I was buying AK's at a Somali streetfair.

Giant leap, not babystep!

Just wondering, not bashing. How many NY police officers have shot themselves and still have their jobs? What is the policy on that in NY state I wonder. Double standard? Might be room to contest this if so...

so that means Bugs Bunny wins. we can't stick our finger in the open end of a pistol and stop a round from exiting... damn superman too, what a show off... guess i wont try that at the next policemans ball

To answer your question Hawk, I've been waiting 4 months for my Nassau permit. It cost $290 for the application fee and fingerprinting fee. The paperwork said it will take 6 months. In fact they put a separate page into the packet in big 72 font letters saying that the current wait time is 6 months and DO NOT CALL before 6 months. I should probably ask my 4 character references if they got any phone calls from the investigator. One guy at the local gun shop said that he heard they're backed up 1 year on permits. I would love to hear from someone who got their permit in the last few months. Is it still 6 months or was that guy correct about the 1 year wait?

Knowing Nassau, they've got some old-timer padding his pension doing ALL the applications . . . slowly . . . and he's off today.

Tomorrow, too.

Also keep in mind that NY is "may issue", so even if you meet all the requirements, they can arbitrarily decline you, based on looks -- or if it's close to quittin' time on a Friday.

What a racket.

How expensive would it be for the PD to have a "weapon clearing pipe" (sandtrap) near the window?

The officer with the enviable task of checking serial numbers could direct the registrant to clear his weapon before handing it through the window tray (or drawer.)

They used to have one of these at the local police department range. I hadn't seen one before, so I asked the RO if it ever saw use (by that I meant did an officer every fire his pistol into it...) and the answer was, "Yes. Too many times."

If you bring a loaded handgun into the room where the inspection is done you could lose your permit. There are signs stating that.

Yes, and there were signs forbidding carrying loaded weapons at the PD firing range, too. The weapon clearing pipe was for "human error".

There's no 100% method of preventing accidents. Layered defense seems to be one of the better methods. Signs, warnings, threats of loss of permit...followed by a safe place to point the muzzle & pull the trigger.

In the Nassau County NY Police Dept. Firearms licensing/inspection room they have a 1" Lexan wall like you see at a bank, with a slot to pass the firearm through. This wall wasn't always there, but is the result of too many AD's in that room, and the need to protect the officers in there.

Well, it used to be that the RULES applied to everyone, so if I were the old coot, I would police the police on AD's, ND's and if they have one, make sure that the same rules apply to them...

Now days however certain rules apply to certain people... Which is BS.
