Winchester, Virginia-AP -- Police say a man tried to beat his dog to death with a shotgun -- but wound up shooting himself to death instead.

Police say the Winchester, Virginia, man called his wife at work yesterday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill it.

Police went to the home and found Raymond Poore Junior covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound to his abdomen.

He died later at Winchester Medical Center.

Police say the shotgun must have gone off while Poore was using it to beat the 30-pound shar-pei. The stock of the weapon was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

A Winchester animal control officer took custody of the dog. There's no word on how badly it was injured.

What a biased report!

It ASSUMES that the dog didn't grab the gun on use it on the twit....

*sigh*
blackhawk, shotguns don't need a dog to pull the trigger. We all know they go off by themselves.

The guy was either an idiot or a sadist. Why did the dog bite him initially? Was it an attack, a playful or accidental bite that he mistook as aggression, did he torture the dog into it, etc? If he truely needed to put the dog down there were certainly better, more humane ways than to beat it to death. Given the manner chosen I wonder if he didn't abuse the dog leading to it's biting him.

At any rate, even if justified, beating it was a savage way to try to kill the dog. He could have taken it to the vet to have it put down or had animal control take it. If he was so mad that he wanted the "satisfaction" of being the one to do it, I can think of a far more effective and humane, not to mention quicker, less messy and apparently safer (for him) way to do it. He used a shotgun to beat it. Hmm, how about using the shotgun the way it was designed? He'd probably still be here.

well, if he was serious about killing the dog because it attacked him, he should have just shot it.

if, on the other hand, the dog attacked him because he was beating it with a shotgun, I kinda think he deserved it.

Sic semper tyrannis.

Just a reminder... Winchester's pretty close to West Virginia. And the biggest three lies in WV are:

1. I didn't know she was my sister when I took her to the prom.
2. Sure I have all my teefs.
3. I was only helping that sheep across the fence. I don't know how her back feet got in my wellingtons.

Note for the humor impaired... Everybody makes fun of everybody. That's life. Get over it.

This guy must have been mistreating the dog for it to turn on him, sounds like divine intervention to me. Hopefully the dog gets a good home now....tom

mine are totally mistreated, here they are attacking a new toy...

The gene pool is gettin WAAAAY too shallow...

Lessee...
I'm going to kill my dog.
..........with a SHOTGUN...........

a. Grab shotgun.
b. Turn shotgun AROUND.
c. Whack dog with shotgun STOCK.
d. Run for telephone.

First, the guy is a whacko.
Second, that dog is probably laffin its head off.

And we STILL give strangers the finger.

I'm positive the dog did it. This tragic accident wouldn't have happened if gun manufacturers didn't negligently market the product to dogs, advertising that it is resistant to paw prints.

I agree that the dog did it on purpose. It was premeditated. After hearing the phone call the dog shot the guy an staged the rest. Call CSI :neener:

Justice at its finest....er pretty dang close anyhow :D

Forget a good home for the dog. He apparently hit it hard enough to break the stock of the gun. Put it out of its misery.

In legal parlance, that`s what`s known as an "OOPS"! Well, not really but this is a family board. :neener:

A gun lock would have prevented this tragedy.
