My local Cabelas has 4 gently used 30-06 Pro Hunters for decent prices. I'm in the market for a good bolt gun (all I shoot / handload are 30-06 & .308). Pricing is in the mid 600's. What people's opinions on these budget Mannlichers? I've been to their factory so I kinda have a fondness for their products. Friends tell me just get a good used Ruger American at a much lower cost and the accuracy performance will be the same.

Kinda partial to Mannlicher rifles myself, although I have never even fired one.
I am building that style of rifle on a 98 Mauser action with a 21-1/2" barrel and full length walnut stock.
But I think if you want one, you should get one, regardless of what anyone thinks, they are a reputable firearms company with a rich history. :D

I just looked them up, I didn't realize the vast selection they currently catalog, I was thinking "Old School Mannlicher" carbine.

I have one in .243 I bought used for $600 and put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 on it ($700) and it seems the perfect .243 for me. I used pre 64 Win. model 70 .243 and Sako FinnBear .243 before it and the new Pro Hunter is more accurate (,5MOA with the right ammo) and the SBS system is easier and more flexible and has a more precise feel to it. The Pro Hunters are light too with an excellent stock design.

I don't care how it shoots.

You can hold a Mannlicher rifle in front of your friends Ruger Americans and sneer at their envy of your rifle.

If you want it to look good and shoot good, then you could get a CZ bolt in 30-06. The wood on the stock would look so good, the deer would probably walk in to get a better look.

Well the Pro Hunter is NOT like my inherited Mallincher Schoenauer 30-06 Carbine but is a high tech weather proof modern rifle.

BBDartCA-

We're discussing the Steyr Pro Hunter, correct? If you don't mind, please PM contact info for the retailer to me. I'm looking for a used Pro Hunter or Pro Hunter Mountain in 30-06. Thanks much.

They are good accurate shooters. I had a 308 with the 20" carbine length barrel that was as accurate as anything I've ever owned. I sold it for 3 reasons.

I was looking for a lightweight, short carbine. It was short, but HEAVY. Much too heavy for it's intended use.

The shape of the bolt handle requires the scope to be mounted very high. Once again not to my liking and it detracted from the usefulness of a carbine meant for woods hunting. The bolt handle can be replaced, but that alone would have only solved one problem.

Magazines were very difficult to obtain and were expensive. I don't want a DBM rifle unless I own at least 1 spare magazine. They invariably get lost at some point.

If those negatives aren't a concern you'd be hard pressed to find a better rifle. The safety was unique, and one I actually really liked.

I don't think some of the earlier posters understand exactly which rifle he is talking about. Some photos
