First of all, does anybody know if my rifle which I believe was manufactured in 2002, has the Mar-shield finish on the wood? I'm pretty sure it does. Marlin has been using this finish for quite a few years, right? Secondly, what is the best way to remove it? Laquer remover? Sand paper? Something else?

I picked up this rifle in a trade. It seems perfect for a project gun. The stock is pretty badly beaten. Dents and scratches abound, but no major gouges. The stain Marlin uses is so dark that it completely negates what is actually some fairly nicely figured wood. I want to take the wood back to its original color and apply some type of clear, flat protectant. Any suggestions there? This is the first time I have delved into a stock refinishing project and I got the rifle so cheap that I won't be sick if I mess it up. Also think I am going to sand out that cheap looking checkering Marlin added.

Thanks in advance for the help.
