A buddy of mine recently came into some new guns from a deceased relative and is looking to offload some. one is a Marlin 357 lever gun in like new condition, its been in a safe for at least 8 to 10 years and we are trying to work out a trade. I have a wasr underfolder I have had for a few years. You guys think this is a good trade value wise? Can you compete in sass with that Marlin? It would be my first small caliber lever gun and I am looking to get into cowboy shoots. Thanks

That sounds perfect if you're looking to get into cowboy, I understand Marlin is used.

You'd actually be making out pretty good. A clearly pre-Remlin model in good shape could fetch $700 or even a bit more from somebody who really wants one. They were hard to find years ago, even more so now. I think a WASR is much easier to come back across.

Yeah, the Marlin is worth more, and will likely become even more so, since they haven't been made for quite some time. By contrast, there are probably millions more AK kits scattered throughout the 3rd world waiting to be imported. Of course a possible future gun ban might make the WASR worth more, but I still doubt it will ever be worth as much as the Marlin 1894.

A Marlin would make an awesome cowboy competition gun, because it is so cheap to buy and reload for pistol calibers like .38/.357, compared to rifle calibers like .45-70 and .30-06. Plus most of those competitions are shot at pretty close range, so the rainbow-like trajectory wouldn't be too much of an issue, and you don't have to worry about trying to kill an animal with a relatively anemic pistol caliber, since you will just be shooting at steel.
