My son just bought a used rifle. It is marked Marlin 22 s,l,lr and it is a single shot bolt action. It has a large ring on the hammer pull that you can stick your finger in. One piece wood stock and only one screw near the forend about center ways from trigger to disassemble. No serial number.
Anyone know what model this is and from when?

Marlin Model 100, I had one had the white bull eye's on the stock. I can't remember what their exact years of production were. Mine was accurate real accurate. Stock was nice walnut too shouldn't have sold it mine had no finish on it was ugly but it would shoot.

The Marlin Model 100 was made from 1935 to 1959.

After 1945, Marlin used a letter code to ID the year made.
From 1946 to 1959 there codes were:
1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S

From about 1930 to date, Marlin made a wide variety of cheaper .22 rifles in single shot, repeaters, and autos.
These rifles were all low-priced, and intended to be budget priced, utility guns.

These low-end rifles were often sold under the "Glenfield" name.

Value on these is usually around $100.00.
