marlin .22 problems please help

Ok I'll try to make the story short. I have a Marlin model 99 M-1 which I inherited from my dad and wouldn't take a million dollars for. Its the first gun I ever fired. It holds great memories of my dad doing amazing things with it. I've seen him strike matches. I've seen him shoot golf balls, make them fly up and shoot them again before they hit the ground. I also have his M1 Garand and 1911 colt that the marine corps issued him in WW2. (Don't know how he came home with them) Anyhow this little .22 means just as much to me as the others. The problem I'm having is a FTF when I pull the bolt. I've been using federal brick ammo and had this prob. quite often. Today I bought some winchester ammo and it was jam-o-matic. I never even got off a single round. My questions are. Is this a problem with the gun or the ammo? What .22 ammo should I use? How do I clean the action on this gun without taking it apart? Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Semi-auto .22s are ammo sensitive. Try a different brand.

Edit: Also check the hammer. If it has been dry fired a lot it may have dulled the hammer.

I don't know quite how to describe the problem I'm having, as I'm sure there are better words. When I pull the bolt to put the first round into the chamber it gets jammed. With the federal ammo everything worked fine once you managed to get the first round in. But it would jam pretty often trying to get the first one in. With the winchester ammo I could never even get the first one in. Once I got that one cleared there was another one jammed behind it. Also had this problem with CCI mini mags. But nothing as bad as it was today. All I've used to clean the action is break free powder blast spray. Do you think a real good break down cleaning would solve this problem?

Funny that you had a problem with Mini-Mags: They never jam in my Model 60, which I believe is the same action. But yes, there's a good chance that a complete breakdown cleaning would solve your problem. Wouldn't hurt, anyway.

clean the chamber face with dental tools , very well. there is a recess that is around the face, and on both sides, for the clips to fit into. they need to be clean, or it wont go into battery. also take the bolt assy out, and let it soak in cleaner for a couple of days, then take out, blow out, lube up, and let er rip. if it still doesn't fire, you could have a bad firing pin.

lastly, how old is this? it may need a new feed throat assy. if it is over 20 years old. they are about 15 bucks for the kit. Call Numrich(eparts) and have your serial number ready, they will be able to tell you if you need a couple of other parts, if your rifle is too old, to just swap latest model parts.
