Like I have said before I am really wanting to get into cowboy action shooting and I am curious for those who have been in the sport. Will a modern Marlin 30/30 336 w work for my lever action or is the caliber and set up wrong?

Yes. The caliber is wrong for SASS. There are side matches with "long range rifles" but in the shooting of standard stages, you require a pistol caliber rifle. You are shooting at @ 10 - 15 yards. First, check out the Shooters Handbook: https://sassnet.com/Downloads/Shooters Handbook Vers 23.2 MASTER COPY.pdf

Then, if at all possible, attend an event. People will be very welcoming. They'll talk your ear off, likely let you shoot their hardware, etc. You'll get a feel for stages and get an insight on what firearms are popular and why. Definitely advise against buying any firearms for SASS until you are familiar with the rules and have been to at least one match.

It's fun. Enjoy!

Can it be done? Sure. Will you have a chance at winning? Not a snowballs chance in hell. And on top of that, you’re wasting powder and bullets.

I don’t shoot CAS. Don’t even have to to know it’s a bad idea. If I were going to get into it, I would have a lever in 38. Straight wall is where it’s at.

That is actually a point. Under the rules, a 30-30 shooting plain base cast bullets at less than 1400 fps would be legal. But one would have to reload mid stage as the 336 won't hold 10 rounds.

BB44 offers good advice. 38 special is popular for being cheap to reload and very low recoil.

Try the current Marlin 1894 C (9 round mag) or CB models (ten round mag) (there are also some older models out there). They fire both .38 SPC and .357 magnum rounds.

Go to the SASS main page and look for the SASS Wire forum. “The Wire” is where you will find all kinds of info on Cowboy Action Shooting and info on guns. Be advised folks will definitely help you spend your money on toys. Look to the top right of the page.

Now, as for your 336 it wouldn’t be a good idea for a main match gun. The best solution is a handgun caliber rifle with single action revolvers in the same caliber. .38 Special is a great cartridge to look at because it’s cheap to reload and it’s cheaper to buy if you don’t reload.

Currently I shoot one of the new Marlin 1894CB rifles in .357/.38. It works just fine. I also shoot Ruger Vaqueros. For my shotgun I use a Stoeger Coachgun. I have had my shotgun since 1997 and it has never failed me, but I did stop shooting CAS for 10 years so it had a long break.

I recommend that you find a local CAS match some weekend soon and go talk with some folks. They will be more than happy to steer you in the right direction, I guarantee it.

Welcome to the fun! :D
