nevermind - I misunderstood what the op was talking about. SORRY! Mine also has a "pistol grip" stock. I just didn't think of it as such. I was thinking of this kind of pistol grip stock:

straight gripped stocks were stoped in 68 or 69 i think and even then the straight grip wasnt standard. unless you get a new marlin guide gun or 1895 or something like that.

ShotgunsRFun If you want one of these guns I would suggest checking Dick's Sporting Goods or your local Walmart if it sells guns are whatever is available close to you. IIRC I saw one in Dick's about a year ago-scope/rifle combo for around $330.00. They are good guns. I had one years ago but had to sell it.

^ Mike J I think I recall seeing a marlin at Dicksport or Walmart. But I would rather buy from Dicksports than boxmart. Just hope the price isnt much more.

what brand of ammo do you use? isnt 30-30 like $13 for a box of 20??? I do not really mind the price if this is such a great gun(western gun)

Try a few out. Whichever one feels the best is the best for you. I prefer the Marlin to the Winchester. Just sits better on my shoulder and in my hands. No real difference in accuracy or reliability that I'm aware of.

There is some recoil, but it is quite mild. Do not, however, think you can get away without eye or ear protection.

I love min and would not trade it for anything (it was an awesome Christmas present from my wife a few years ago.) My only complaint is it has been hard to find 30-30 ammo lately, but that is not the rifles fault:rolleyes:

Yes that is what I had wonderd, Shortage on 30-30. I see the price is $12-$15 for a box of 20 is that normal price before 2008??

This does make a great range gun to?
not just hunting

If you are interested in a lever gun for range shooting, but aren't going to hunt with it, there are other options.

A Marlin 1894 can be had in pistol calibers for example.

I have a 336C as my deer gun and I love it. But its not cheap enough on ammo to make me want to just go to the range and shoot for fun very often.

benzy is that a 336rc? the staright gripped models are rare, i have a 1967 rc.
Honestly I think it is a mix-n-match from the previous owner. Nothing fits a given model. It has the straight stock, which by all means looks to be a authentic Marlin stock and not a reproduction from another company. It also has a saddle ring and the gold trigger. The other thing funny is that it has the square lever. It dates to 1982 or 83, don't remember. I haven't been able to find those options together in that year in any reference, though it may be possible I haven't found the right reference. Something leads me to believe that someone has decided to add their favorite parts to this rifle long before it saw my hands. It was an auction buy so I don't have any previous knowledge of what it was beyond what you can see.

Used Marlin 336C's with the walnut stocks seem to start about $400.00 or so around here. The better condition the higher the price of course. I'm not even sure what a new one sells for.

I got a new 336W with a hardwood stock at Wal-Mart for $356.00. Shoots just fine and looks pretty decent too.

When I was a teen I had a 336 in 35 Remington. I have since moved onto an 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70. Marlin makes an incredible lever gun.

My dad gave me a great Marlin 366 30-30 as my first gun.
Shoots nice, holds 7 if you carry one in the chamber.
Its a great little rifle, pretty light, easy handling.
Its my backpacking/camping gun.
I'd recommend it.

I have a marlin 336 and love the thing. I bought it for I think $175 slightly used with scope that is dead on. Ive shot both the 94 and 336 and feel for the most part they are very similar, only difference to me was the method of ejection. Winchester is out the top and marlin is out the side which I think is cool. Great rifle IMHO

Great handling, packing, shooting little guns. I've got a Williams peep on the rear and an orange fiber optic on the front. Plenty accurate and enough punch at any reasonable range. Get two. They're inexpensive!

i think that the marlin excells as a short, light, and fast handling "brush gun" capable of taking deer sized game out to 150 yards. with newer ammo, you probably could get more than that. they are well made, accurate within their parameters, and versatile. people around here use them for hunting, home defense, truck guns, range guns, you name it.

imho, two center fire rifles that you can never go wrong with are quality made bolt guns (several makes come to mind),and marlin 336 levers.

I've got two. I bought a MINT 1970's model with 200 rounds of ammo and a scope/sling for $325 or so, and a pretty rough "hunting gun" of the same vintage for $125. The latter had a lot of pitting and surface rust, but shot well.
