I am in the market for a lever action rifle and am wondering what are the differences between the 30 AS and the more recent 336? I understand the stock on the 30 AS is hardwood and not Walnut, but are there any technical differences? Or to put it another way, does the 336 have anything I will not get if I buy a 30 AS?

I think the 30AS has the front sight dovetailed into the barrel. On the 336 there is a ramp screwed into the barrel and the front sight is dovetailed into the ramp.

I believe the 336W is a hardwood stock, not walnut, and the checkering is pressed in.

I have the 30 A(W?) model, and I believe the only difference is that my stock is birch instead of walnut. It looks just as classy/classic, and it shoots great with the iron sights. You'll be totally fine with it, and probably save a bit of money in the process.
