Hi,

What is special about the RC model? Does it have microgroove rifling? What kind of wood did they use on the stocks? Walnut or hardwood? Are they on the same level as current C or W models?

RC stands for regular Carbine. Nothing special.
It will be an older gun. probably walnut stock. 55 or earlier will have ballard rifling.
Very nice guns. Better made than current models.

Guy is offering me $375 shipped with cheap 3x4 scope. Some blueing wear, but good rifling and bore. tight action.

I'm awaiting pictures, will post them when he sends them. Is there a non d&t option for scopes for the marlin 336? it comes with one mounted already.

Hey Dakota. Marlin didn't start D&T until the early sixties I believe. If you know the first two digits of the serial, we can determine the year of manufacture. If it has a letter to start out the serial, then it is an older 50s or 60s.

RCs were made for a while, and it could be made in the 70s. They are good rifles.

I got photos!

Owner mentioned: The bluing on the gun is well faded, and some is a patina look.

Bore and muzzle are great..

Wood has lots of marks but no breaks or cracks...If finish was removed and a bit of sanding, then refinished, it would look great< however it needs nothing if you dont mind the marks.

I have the option of this rifle or a pre-64 winchester 94 in 30-30 for $350 shipped. Which is the better rifle for the price?

Here's a link to my thread about the Win 94: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=603674

The winny pre-64 is worth a little more than that if its in good shape....

....But I'd rather have the 336 all day long and twice on Saturday!

That Marlin appears to be in good condition. I wouldn't want to pay over $375 though. I can usually find a good 336C for $300-350. But this one you want has the old "sowbelly" forearm stock...somewhat collectible/desirable. Yes, it has walnut furniture on it.

Serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1953 so the D&T'd was aftermarket. Also, anyway of telling if it's microgroove or ballard style rifling?

I would get the Marlin over the Winnie any day. The Winnies are just a pain to clean and breakdown.

I have a 1951 Marlin like that and it shoots awesome. I Paid 350, but what's $25? If you like it buy it.

Although I bought mine especially because it didn't have holes drilled and tapped in the receiver......nice and clean. If you were planning on a scope anyway....bonus.

A mount costs that anyway even if the scope sucks. It might be an old Weaver scope and those themselves are worth $50 all day long on ebay and forum sales.

For that gun the price is right and it will be a better rifle than a new Marlin. I collect Mod 94's and have many and only one Marlin. To me the 94 is special, but in reality I believe the Marlin is a little better rifle.

The seller says that the butt plate is a replacement and there isn't the white spacer. I think I'll wait for a cleaner example for a marlin that is later production and has the receiver factory d&t'd. Also, which is more desirable, microgroove or ballard rifling? My marlin .22lr is microgroove and it's crazy accurate with iron sights.

I will be going with the win 94.
