Marlin 336 Scope Thoughts?

I think a Lyman 48 would be an outstanding receiver sight for this rifle. Without exception, every receiver sight I mounted required a higher front sight. If someone drilled & tapped the receiver you could mount a 1x5 or get a rebuilt weaver k3 with a post & crosshair reticle.

I don't recall seeing where Lyman made a #48 to fit a flat-sided levergun. Hence the #66.

No, don't D&T a waffle top.

People put too much value in maintaining the 'value' of a firearm. No, I wouldn't drill a Waffletop, but I would (or would have) the butt drilled professionally for a sling mount, assuming that's what you need. The true value of a firearm is what it means and does for you. If it has/is going out into the field to hunt, well, it's not going to be a museum piece, anyway.

The rear sight... I just take the ramp out from under the leaf and leave it. It doesn't really get in the way. If you insist, you can get a dovetail blank to replace the old leaf... a few of my rifles have them (you can see them in the photo I posted.) Those were put in by previous owners; personally, I just either leave them, or tap them out and leave the empty dovetail.

Before I put a scope on my 1963 model 336 it had a steel Lyman 66LA on it. Perhaps someday if my grandson hunts I'll put that sight back on. I wouldn't feel bad putting an aluminum Lyman or Williams on. They are adequate for a hunting rifle. That steel Lyman used will cost twice what the new ones cost.

Just me, I suppose, but an empty dovetail slot would offend my sense of what's right and wrong with the world. :what: Nope, I'd be looking for a blank to fill that void before tomorrow. :)
i make the blanks from small scrapes of walnut, i made a dovetail in some round stock. they are quick to make and look nice, it bugs me when i see one without a black.

That dovetail blank, in my view, is a safety feature... keep somebody from absentmindedly running their hand across a sharp edge.

Meh, if you look at my pic, 2 of those rifles don't have fillers... the 71 and the 1894. 2 others do... so instead of a dovetail cut, there is a big square piece of metal sticking up? To each his own...

The one that busted your lip... what rifle was it mounted on? I'm trying to visualize how that'd happen.

It was on a Sharps, a .45-120 black powder cartridge rifle, and the tang sight had the big traverse knob on the hinge. I learned to shoot peeps right up and close... so when he let me shoot his rifle, I just, well... snuggled right up to it! The rifle went *boom!* and I saw stars... I thought I had knocked my teeth out. I did not drop the rifle, however I probably bled on it a little... and I did hit the steel target. Lesson learned.

I bought a Trijicon 1-4 accupower for my AR15, really cool scope but putting one on a lever gun seems sacrilegious to me.
Kinda like putting a red dot on an old Colt SAA.
