At least this one has a poll attached so we can keep track of numbers.

It'll be interesting to watch, even if I already know what the posts are going to say.

IMHO the Marlin is a better overall operator and a hair more accurate that the 94. the Marlin is also much easier to work on- however, the 94 is a very fine firearm and i really quite enjoy the milled receivers and polished blue of a pre 64

Deja Vu really bad. I'm sure we've covered this before.

Seriously, I cannot and will not choose. To me, the two rifles are as different as my Win M70 and Rem M700. They may have the same type of action, but they are different rifles. I refuse to choose the best between the two, just as I would refuse to choose between two children. The Marlin and Win each have a lever, but please don't think that the are two versions of the same rifle. They are not.

The Marlin has the most technologically modern feel, but the Win is slender and easy to carry. I want to keep and use both, not to make a choice between the two.

94 Big Bore (.375 Win or 38-55)

Yeah it's been done but somebody has got to like 94s. Here's a Post 64 that is a love in my life.

Higene

PS It shoots minute of critter offhand quicker than a scoped rifle.

I find the Winchester to be simpler to operate for my uses. I prefer to keep the magazine loaded with regular loads, and open the action to drop in a light small game load. The Winchester is easier to do this with, simply not moving the lever all the way to the end of its stroke, or pushing the lifter down if it has come up. Ejection of the single loaded rounds is as simple.

Yikes... Marlin is winning handily at this point. I have to vote for the Winny, as it is my first gun love. Slim and easy handling rifle, even if the later versions were lacking in bluing quality. I grew up disliking Marlin, mainly b/c of my Dad's distaste for them. I own three now (one being a lever), and they are all good firearms. I can see why Marlins are a much appreciated rifle. I agree with Ants' statement though; different rifles.

Also, like higene, my big bore (kinda) .307 is my favorite.

The Marlin is clearly superior when it comes to bore cleaning from the rear end, and mounting a scope.

With that said, I voted for the Winchester 94.
It's the real deal to me, and the 336 isn't.

RC, I'm not disputing your claim here; to each his own opinion and I generally respect yours.

But I am curious: what makes the 94 the "real deal" for you?

Mainly because Winchester won the west, invented the 30-30 (30 WCF) and the 1894, and I have a gun cabinet full of old Winchesters.

I only have one Marlin. One like Winchester never made.
A .44 Mag Guide-Gun.
It's a real honey, but it's not a classic Winchester lever-action.

The only correct answer to this poll is "both". If you're talking .30-30s, the only responsible thing is to own both a Marlin 336 and a Winchester 94. I bought both of mine for less than $400 combined.

How about the 336 is a slightly superior refinement of the lever design, but the 94 is the standard of comparison, and so steeped in history that you must own it too...

Is it one of the ported ones?

The 336, because Marlin might be the last American gun company where I feel like I get what I pay for.

I voted for the Marlin for most of the reasons stated above. I had to let my head make that decision though as I own both and the 94 was a gift from my Dad when I was 18. There is nothing in this world that could get me to let go of it.

BUT, I like the scope abilities and hand position of the 336 better. I get similar accuracy out of the 336 as the target above with my handloads, the 94 I've not been able to get as tight a group (it has iron sights so that's a liability).

I agree though, have both! They are both extremely satisfying rifles to shoot and own.
