So are you both in agreement...? I couldn't quite tell.

Yeah, we are. Dr. Rob said push-button safeties are no improvement and I, from experience with those safeties, am agreeing with his statement.

FWIW, having that lawyer-mandated push-button safety is just another way to hear "CLICK" when you wanted to hear "BOOOOOM".

I'm also in complete agreement with Carl N. Brown's statement that:

Too much complication does not lead to increased safety
and these additions do not help in my not so humble opinion.
Reliance on too many mechanical safeties leads to lax safety discipline.
My 39M Marlin does not have anything but the half cock
hammer safety and I feel perfectly safe with a simpler
safety discipline.

My main hunting rifle is a pre-safety '94 Winchester .30-30 and it has the half-cock notch and I'm used to this system. I'm fixing to get that push-button safety removed from a couple of newer leverguns so I'll be dealing with the same system there too.

Leverguns are a new thing for me - I've always wanted to pick up a 30-30, but never have. Today I was at a local shop and they had a used 336 and a 30A(?). The 336 didn't have a safety, but the other did. Both were $249. I'm very tempted to go buy one.

Get the 336, mount a Williams Foolproof w/target knobs, and don't look back. Try out 150gr and 170gr and that new Hornady LeverEvolution load and see what does best in this particular rifle. I think you'll be glad you did. And yeah, you're liable to buy a few more leverguns once you get started.
