Marlin 336

Bergman, im aware of how to fix the problem, but with a new gun? i should expect they would at least cycle. in a used gun i would love it honsetly, i could get the price down siginificantly more. That and alot of people arnt nessarly comfortable really getting into the guts of the rifle.

That struck me as odd as well. Obviously, they never cycled the action with dummy rounds to see if everything was okay. As mentioned above, I also had issues with my 39A from way back.

Both of these rifles represent ancient designs that require a lot of highly skilled craftsmen to carefully fit the action parts to make a properly functioning rifle. These aren't skills taught in the local gunsmithing school, these are handed down by masters at Marlin to capable apprentices. This is old school and not in tune with modern marketing methods. I fear that this practice does not enjoy the support of the MBA bean counters.

I bought my first gun, a Marlin 336 30-30 in 1968 when I was 17, new with my dad with money I earned. Intended to get a 35 but the store was out. Had that rifle for about 10 years when my van was stolen with it inside. I replaced it with a 336 in 35 Rem that year and later bought a Marlin 375 when they first came out in the early '80s.

I don't know about the new Marlins, but guns in general are not built as well as they were even 10 years ago let alone decades ago. If I was looking for a Marlin 336 I would start combing the pawn and gun shops for a used one.

It's not that I'm dead set on buying a new gun. I have several used guns. I would PREFER to have a new gun though if it is possible, if I can get the same performance from a new Rossi than I can get with a used Marlin than I would go with a new Rossi. Thats why I am asking about it, if the Rossi Rio Grande is not up to par with an older Marlin than I would buy an older Marlin. I am not a loyalist to any company and name matters nothing to me, I just want a solid gun that can take a whitetail at a max of 150 yards if I do my part. The 2 guns are priced about the same so why not buy a new rifle >IF< performance is on par with the used gun? So,back to my question. Can a Rossi Rio Grande perform on par with an older Marlin?

if the Rossi Rio Grande is not up to par with an older Marlin than I would buy an older Marlin.

They are not up to par. Get a pre-safety 1983 or older Marlin 336. Or a Glenfield Model 30. Keep shopping until you can land one for under $400. They are out there, I promise.

I found a Marlin Texan for a guy I work with, for 300, private party sale. Great condition, pre safety, straight stock (Texan). The are deals around, id you are dead set on a new gun.......well that's your choice, the biggest thing I can say is to check the new Marlins carefully, and make sure the one you check is the one you buy (some stores have one on the shelf for display and the treat are in the back, and those are the ones they sale). Good luck and I hope we don't discourage you. I would recommend reading up on Marlinowners.com and check the classifieds good deals pop up from time to time.

bad pic.
good deal (200 bucks) :D
shoots GREAT.
old skool weaver even looks ok (although i have kinda become a 'glass snob)
my FTX hornady home brews have knocked down all sorts of animals.

It's quite easy Gizards.
I have bought several on GunBroker and actually have a bid on a 336 right now.
Read the tutorial on GB and if you are nervous about it after that(understandable) ask the many of us here that have done this numerous times.
It's not as daunting as it might seem.

MSRP on a blue one is what ? about 400-500 depending on wood, a stainless is almost 700

shop around. i just bought a really clean 1949 SC 336 with a vintage redfield peep for 350. i have bought 2 pre safety glenfield 30's (department store branded marlin 336) for under 300 in the last few years.

buy a used one and be happy.

I have 0 experience buying guns online. Could any local gunshop prder that Limited Edition Longhorn for me? How do I buy a gun off gunbroker?

Piece of cake Giz---I've bought at least twelve guns off of G/Broker this year and every transaction has gone very smooth. Hell, I've even got two pistols that I bought and paid for over three months ago that I haven't even seen yet-----'cuz the sellers are holding them for me in two different states.......:D
