Evenin' all,
Have a buddy who's looking at a new Marlin 336; he's not going to be able/willing to deal with any performance issues. He's gotten better at functionality with several platforms but is not interested in amateur gunsmithing.

He wants a new Marlin 336 but I've heard they've suffered some quality setbacks of late. He's excited about his first cowboy gun, but will he be happy? Thanks in advance!

In my experience they have resolved the QC issues. I own a small gun shop, and in the last few months I have had a few dozen new Marlins come through. They have all been as good or possibly better than the late production guns with the JM proof. No more canted sights, poor fitting wood, or hard actions. It is a limited sample size obviously, but it seems they have gotten much better than they were a year ago.

I got to handle one today and agree the fit and finish was quite nice, better than the Rossi next to it. But the action felt stiff and rough, in that regard the Rossi felt much better.

I don't know if they have something that appeals to you but I'm impressed with the value proposition of the Henry Repeating Arms lever guns I've run across. I just haven't found the right combination I want yet, mostly because I don't want an octagon barrel rifle. I will own one someday though.

Me personally? Go with a used Marlin/Winchester, me I'd go with a Marlin. To many 300 dollar Marlins around (if your patience), regardless research your purchase, Rossi is the direction I'd go if i had to get new, but i prefer used.
