I currently have a 25 yr. old Marlin 60 and am wanting another .22,. I do like the marlin but the Ruger "seems" more popular today.

I'm leaning toward the marlin because I have never had to change any parts on it, is pretty accurate, and can use parts from one to fix the other if needed.

I will say that using bulk ammo with my marlin sucks, but with CCI mini mags, never a problem.

I would like opinions from those who have/had both or are familiar with both?

I have both.

They are both fine, inexpensive .22 autoloaders with dedicated fans.

The Marlin is a bit more ammo sensitive than the 10/22, but it is also a bit more accurate, IMO, so I tend to favor it.

I think you should get the Ruger, as it makes a great addition to any rimfire rifle collection, and is really fun to shoot.

I have a model 60 & like it too, but i would buy the ruger just because its a different rifle . Most of my firearms are ruger's they make a good reliable gun . Im sure the 10/22 has its issue's but i think it would make a fine addition to anyones collection.

My Marlin 60 (recent manufacture) works fine with any ammo I've fed it, but Mini-Mags are nice and accurate, so I favor them usually. Can't argue with predictable 1/2" groups at 50 yards from an inexpensive .22.

I sold my 10/22 because it was ammo-sensitive, inaccurate, unreliable, and the stock didn't work worth a damn with a scope. I wanted to like it because it is a good, natural-feeling carbine with iron sights, but whenever I shot it, it was nothing but frustrating. And there are guns that are a lot more fun to shoot with irons or peeps, like the Marlin 39.

I personally don't think the 10/22 is worth buying unless you want a project. Some people really enjoy modifying them. I didn't care to, and I didn't think the gun was worth keeping, in stock form. But with a bunch of money and effort, you can make a hobby of turning the 10/22 into a good rifle.

If I were you, I'd keep the Marlin and enjoy it, and get something other than another cheap semiauto. Consider a CZ bolt gun or a Marlin lever action. They cycle with anything from CBs to Velocitors, they're accurate, and they're fun.

just sold my model 60, i loved that gun but to be honest my mossburg model 151k was MUCH more accurate and IMO a over all better gun. check those out, they are extremely nice when found in good condition

Those old Mossbergs are accurate as all get-out. Mine is -- but the feeding system is not up to Marlin's ease of use and reliability.

Seriously, consider a bolt or lever gun. I really only use my semiauto for shooting varmints. As a "fun gun" a lever action beats the pants off an autoloader, and the CZ will outshoot any semiauto out there, with a fantastic trigger out of the box, too. The only downside of either one is that everyone will want to shoot your gun.:)

I have a Ruger 10/22 that has ate most everything Ive fed it -- Wildcats, Stingers, Mini-Mags, cheapie Thunderbolts, even light-loaded bulk-pack Winchesters. It has had a few hiccups with Federal bulk-packs, but everything else works just fine. Its accurate, too. Fist sized groups at 75 feet with open sights (it could be better im sure, but Im a lousy shot).

That being said my next firearms purchase (probably sometime in December or January) is a Marlin 60.

Just get both

No, you're not a bad shot. If my 10/22 did much better than that with a scope off a rest, I might not have sold it.:)

Interesting timing for this thread, I just spent part of the afternoon yesterday sighting-in a Marlin 60 for my nephew with a fixed 4x BSA scope (yeah I know, but it was $12 on clearance at WallyWorld and if it gives out on him i have another...). It shot much better than my 10/22 with the same ammo. I was impressed with the accuracy in fact at 50 yds. It is new manufacture, as is my 10/22, and at least between the two examples versus one another the marlin 60 was clearly more accurate. Tennis ball sized groups at 50yds.

Try it with CCI Mini Mags. Mine does consistent nickel-size groups or better, with a 4X Nikon scope, rested on a wood block and a towel.

My 10/22 couldn't do that at 25 yards, to say nothing of 50.

Still, if you already have a Marlin 60, why not take the plunge and get a CZ 452 or Marlin 39?:)

I had a BSA, too. POS. Replaced it with a Simmons. At least that held zero, but the eyestrain was killing me. Replaced that with a Nikon.

$100 for the 4x32mm Nikon Rimfire Classic, including rings, is about the best deal in any scope, anywhere, IMO.

I have a Marlin 60 with a leupold scope vx II 2-7x33mm,and usually
i use CCIs stingers ,velocytor and subsonics.Nice rifle !

I own both.

The Marlin model 60 is more accurate than the 10/22. The 10/22 is nice in that it has a magazine instead of being tube fed.

If you want accuracy, go with the Marlin. If you want to modify and build a rifle to your personal liking, get the 10/22.

Both are good guns so maybe you should get one of each!

:neener:

That depends. In a state where I have to unload to stay legal in a lot of situations (e.g. crossing a public road) the magazine is sure nice. In a state where I can drive around on the Interstate with a loaded gun on the seat, I like the tube better since it's far more pleasant to load.:)

get the ruger you will want both. i have both i like different things about each gun. the marlin is way more accurate though.

Between me and the kids we have 5 Ruger 10-22's. The worst of them is a 1" shooter at 50 yards with good ammo. About 1 1/2" with bulk ammo. The Marlin will probably out shoot that, but I just prefer the Ruger for a variety of reasons. If I want to shoot little groups I bring out my CZ.

Bought my son a Ruger for Christmas about 30 years ago, terrible with stringing shots. Could have monkeyed with it, but traded for a .270 bolt Ruger for him to deer hunt. I felt bad he had no .22 so I gave him my Winchester 74 which is a tackdriver. I bought a Marlin stainless 6o with laminate stock, tube fed and could not be happier. I like Ruger arms and own a fair number, but I think the 10/22 is for someone modifying the rifle to their liking. The barrel band is the cause for some of the accuracy problems, I think.

My 10/22 made consistant 10 shot nickle sized holes with a 4x32 Bushnell Sportsview scope from a rest. My Marlin 60 was slightly better. The only .22 rifle I've had that was more accurate than those was a Remington Targetmaster single shot.
