Marlin 60 or Ruger 1022

the 1022 is by far the better all purpose rifle.

i had a model 60, in fact it was the first rifle i ever purchased but i now have a 1022. the 60 was nice, but ive enjoyed my 1022's more.

I dont have either but have shot both, I have a old Remington .22 semi-auto. But the question is do you mind loading the feed tube or would you rather have a detachable magizine?

Still, if you already have a Marlin 60, why not take the plunge and get a CZ 452 or Marlin 39?

I couldn't agree more. My favorite all around .22 is my Marlin 39a..........it's just plain fun to shoot. They are so well made that with reasonable care one will last several generations.

But then when I go to the range to shoot little groups, the one I grab is the CZ. There are better rifles............but not for the money. ;)

One consideration is magazine type. In a .22 rifle I prefer the tube type over the removable mag of the 10/22. I used to have the 60, which I liked, but today have a couple of Brownings, the Semi-Auto and the BL-22, both tube type magazines. Browning Semi-Auto is the sweetest shooting .22 rifle I have ever shot, and it takes down. Only 5.5 pounds.

But I'd stick with the tube magazine just for convenience.

so simple; if you wanna play with it, change it, make it into all kinds of stuff, the ruger. if you just want it to work, and be accurate, right out of the box, the marlin. and yes I have had many of both.

Yeah, that rifle LOOKS really odd, like it would be off-balance. But it feels really good.

The Marlin 39 is also a takedown, BTW.

I've read many threads on this question. The consenses of people who have had both is clear. They both cost the same. If you want to spend an amount equal to your purchase price for premium parts and invest your labor, you can make the Ruger shoot as accurately as the Marlin will out of the box. The Marlin is also slimmer and lighter, which is nice for kids, and never needs any work beyond cleaning.

Ya know -

This Ruger bashing is irritating.

I have a ten year old utterly stock 10/22 WMR.

Hadn't shot it for a while.

So here are the results.

Freehand, factory iron sights, with trifocals, @ 40 yards.

The group is 1 7/8" high by 1 1/2" wide.

Gimme a break!

CZGuy -

I read through a number of forums, and

The consensus seems to be that

If you pick up a 10/22, the only thing to do

Is replace the barrel with some whizzy thing,

Then replace the stock,

And float the barrel.

Then replace the fire control group with Volquartsen,

And by the way put a serious scope on it,

Before you can shoot straight with the POS.

I dunno, doing OK with it bang straight out of the box,

Over the last decade.

Perhaps it is the difference between

Shooting rats and overthetop GunBling.

And by the way finally managed to attach a picture from a week or so ago.

Of the 2 given choices, I'd lean toward the Marlin... (it's the most popular 22 ever made for a reason)... now, going off the board here, if I could have any 22 semi available, I'd have to take a Remington Nylon 66. My second choice would br the Remington 597 (which I have and love it...)

Well, if Ruger would have made a great rifle in the first place, there wouldn't be a need for that much aftermarket... Mine?? Yes, I have one, and it is currently at the bottom of the Ohio River... why?? it was a lemon from the get-go... was sent back to Ruger, and came back as bad, if not worse than it was when I got it... and I bought it brand new...

Cheers...

Guess I'm lucky -

I'm the only person in the world

Who got an utterly reliable, straight shooting

10/22 WMR out of the box.

Ain't bitchin' by any means.

I have an old friend that swears by his stock 10-22, he got it when we were about 14.
I love my Marlin 60, for me it comes in 2nd only to my 30 year old 39A.
We're both almost 50 now and neither one is gonna change their mind so we just grin when the subject comes up... like now.
We've never had a shoot-off between us, I think neither of us really wants to know. Besides, these days his eyes are better than mine.
Being a lefty I took a lot of spray from the ejector port of his Ruger when I shot it so early on that made up my mind for me.

It's still a better discussion than 9mm vs .45 :neener:

Reminds me of the story of the Minnesota farmer and his hammer. Had this hammer for 20 years. Replaced the head twice and the handle three times. Said it was the best hammer he ever had.

I've got five 10/22's. They're all good, reliable little rifles. Not target rifles maybe but more than good enough for plinking, squirrel hunting and such. Except for cheap scopes and slings, I've never spent a dime modifying them.

I've never shot a Model 60, I think they're ugly, but a lot of people like them.

They're both good guns. They're cheap 22 rifles. It's not like you're buying a car or a house. If you get one and don't like it, you can always sell it and get the other one. You might lose a few bucks, but it's not the end of the world.

My Marlin 60 with Tech Sights is very accurate! I can nail the 2" spinner 9 times out of 10 at 40 yards.

Whichever one you get, consider Tech sights, they are 100% better than open iron sights and more rugged and low profile than a scope.

10/22 WMR out of the box.

That's not the same rifle, though. AFAIK it's a steel receiver, for one thing. It was a good deal more expensive and far fewer were built. So whatever you experience with your rifle has little relevance whatsoever to the rough aluminum receiver, plastic trigger group and lousy barrel on a current-production .22LR 10/22.

I'm sure your rifle is great. It's also not the rifle under discussion. My other Ruger firearms have been wonderful, too, each in its own way. Just not my 10/22.

I have both and see little difference in accuracy I just like the Ruger better.

If you are going to keep the rifle stock, choose the Marlin. Much more accurate generally and better sights. If you like to spend lots of money on barrels, trigger groups, stocks etc.... get the Ruger. The choice is simple. Or if 30-round mags are important to you, choose the Ruger.

Isher, no offense, but that is about typical of 10/22's and I don't consider that particularly accurate.

Ruger 10/22 would be my vote. While it may not be super accurate it's plenty accurate for plinking. It's also nice that it can be modified soo easily. It can also be made super accurate if you want to put the money into it.

Here is a target I shot with mine from approx. 36 yards.

Is that group great? No. Is that from super far away? No. However, it's plenty accurate for me and some of that may be me also as I was just shooting off a deck rail. I didn't have a super steady rest. It's just a fun gun not that the Marlin 60 is bad. I think since you already have a Marlin 60 though why not try out a 10/22?

BTW the above grouping was with Winchester Xpert bulk ammo from WallyWorld so not any match ammo or anything. For some reason it stovepipes every few shots if you use the Federal bulk packs but it shoots similar in accuracy to this. So I just use the Winchester Xperts.

What is the difference between "tech sights" and other brands of "peep sights"?

Most peep sights are rear sight only, the tech sights come with an AR-style protected front post, which I much prefer to the bead-style front sight.

Get the Ruger 10/22. Yes they cost a little more but they are worth it.

My 10/22 eats any .22LR ammo.

I personally use Remington 525 bulk pack golden bullet hollow points and they work just fine.

You can get a blued with wood stock from Wally World in my area for $197. Pretty darn good deal.

Also there are a bazillion customization kits out there for the 10/22.
