Marlin 60

I have not had a problem with my 10-22 mags, but I only feed it decent ammo. I have fed it several hundred rounds of cheap Federal, though, and never had a mag problem. It just don't cap every one of 'em reliably, ammo problem, not the gun other than perhaps the firing pin could make a little larger dent. I have .22s that will cap the stuff reliably and they leave a bigger dent. I like the rotary mag, though, fits flush, reliable as all get out. I can leave it loaded for 6 months and it'll work, no worry about a magazine spring taking a set or something like happens on stick mags. I KNOW the Ruger will go bang every time, regardless of how long it's sat loaded, nice. I don't have a problem leaving my tube fed Remington loaded, though, either, but I have seen problems with my old Mossberg and its stick mag in this regard. Now, I don't leave, but one .22 loaded, normally, that with CB shorts, the Remington. I've had a problem with stray dogs killing my cats. I think the dog catcher might have finally made a dent in 'em, though, 'cause I haven't had a 3AM visit from 'em in a while. But, with the Ruger, I can leave the mag OUT of the gun, loaded, ready to go. Of course, the gun won't feed CB shorts.

I don't have a problem with the Marlin, just don't think it's the end all of .22s.

In what respects is the M60 the best .22 auto ever made?
Ok I should have said for the money. I did say out of the box though. I have several custom 10/22's. 2 of which the only Ruger part left is the receiver. My marlins are almost as accurate with cheap ammo as those customized Rugers are with match ammo. I also have a TC classic which is the most accurate out of the box semi I have ever seen. But for the price of the TC you could buy 4 M60's. I have a CZ bolt gun also. All these other rifles like expensive match ammo. The marlin prefers the cheap stuff and comes pretty darn close in accuracy to the others, including the bolt gun. Thats what in my book makes it the best.

ABout four or five years ago in a field type informal club match shot at 50 yards I was acused of "cheating by trotting out the smaller of our Anshutz hunting rifles, a little 1441/42/43. The match did call for NO MATCH ammo, but there is not a hill of beans between such and my favorite .22LR in this rifle. Positions were all unsupprted and without slings, meant to simulate hunting.

Longstory short the guy that beat me and my much lauded bolt action by a couple of points and beat the host of 10/22s out there was shooting a thirty or more year old Model 60 with the cheap little 3/4 inch scope that came with it back then, with some sort of value pack ammo, and a plaid flannel shirt.

It is the guy not the gun given most real world situations. And often as not it is the guy as much as anything else even from the bench.....othewise matches would be settled by who showed up with the most highly rated gear with no bother to shoot.

I've never actually owned a Marlin 60. Friends have and I have watched them and shot their Mod 60s. I have never found them to be junk or more unreliable than any other .22LR Semi Auto, even when volunteering as a Range Safety Officer.

If I wanted a rifle I could play leggos with and swap out 47 hundred different after market parts on I would by a RIger 10/22. If I thought havinr a removable magazine or even a "high capacity" magazine were that important in a .22LR then I would definately get a 10/22.

But if I had no .22LR semi auto and wanted one and I just wanted an alright decent shooting and functioning .22LR Semi and had no problems with tube feed and wanted to spend as little as possible to get those things......I'd buy the Marlin and most likely a used one at that.

I bought a Marlin 60 NIB in 1980. It has been nothing but perfect ever since, and with countless thousands of rounds through it. All my kids learned to shoot with it, and my grandkids will also. I have a Ruger 10/22 also, but it is not as accurate as the Marlin. It is a good gun, but I'll take the Marlin over it any day of the week.

Just brought my NIB Marlin 60 home about an hour ago. Will take it to the club later today to run a couple hundred rounds through it. This is my first plinker in many years and I'm looking forward to getting reaquainted with the fun. I'm sure I'll enjoy it as much as I did years ago.

I currently own several Marlin/Glenfield 60's or 75's as well as a number of other "better" .22's. Just this week I bought 2 more, one very cherry 75 for $85, and an even better Glenfield 60 with the squirrel on the stock for $75.
While I like my "nice" guns when I want to go shoot and have fun, the little marlins come out.

For the money they are the best value for a .22, and in my experience Marlins with feed issues usually can be corrected by taking the rec. apart and cleaning the gunk out. I have bought several over the years that other had feed problems with, and all were filled with gunk.

They don't give match accuracy, but they do put the bullet downrange consistently with what is usually more than acceptable "practical" accuracy.

"Are Marlins as popular as 10/22s?"

The Marlin 60 has sold more than 11 million guns while the Ruger 10/22 has sold about 5 million.

"Well, how many after-market parts are there for Marlins 60s? How many custom Marlin builders?"

What I get from that is that people like the Marlin for what it is and people like the Ruger for what they can make it into (if you change everything out except the receiver can you still call it a Ruger?).

Of the semi autos I have(had), the Marlin 60 is my favorite, it can shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards and is perfectly reliable. I didn't like the Ruger, I don't like the rotary magazines (half the ones I got didn't work) and it wasn't as accurate as the Marlin. I didn't like the Browning, the barrel nut came loose after 10 rounds of shooting and couldn't get better than 2" at 50 yards. I like the Remington 597 (still have it), it isn't as accurate as my Marlins and did have a reliability problem at first, but it's running good now.

I traded mine in for one of the new MKII Savages and guess what I got. A mediocre piece of tin. I gotta go get mine back! The savage bubbas can keep the accu-trigger. Dollar for dollar Marlin 60 is the best.

pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.......:):):)!

that's what I think about mine

edited to add....

however, you can give your money to Billy Ruger and he'll be sure to use it to help the government ban high cap mags (>5 rounds was his definition of high cap.)

now whether the Marlin model 60 is considered to have a "high capacity" magazine would be an interesting question indeed.

I'd say it's the best gun for the money I've ever bought, but I got a Gewehr 98 for $98 once and paid $80 for my Glennfield 60...

Still, best .22 you can buy for the money, and pretty damn good even when money isn't a factor.

I put optics on it right away. The comb works well with a scope.

I had a Simmons 22 Mag Compact 4X scope I pulled off my Ruger when I sold it; that's what I put on it. Works well. Surprisingly bright, clear image for an inexpensive scope.

One day, I may put something else on it, but right now, this works well and it's still nice and light.
