I did a search on the forum and came up with very little.
Purpose: A rifle for my G/F to carry in her bug-out-bag in case of SHTF. Yeah i know, it's just a .22. So what. This isn't about caliber, it's about just having a rifle. It's lighter than anything else, which means she can move, and keep up with me.

Do any of you who actually have real live experience with one have anything to say about it? Reliability, accuracy, etc...

And no, I have heard too many bad reviews on the reliability of the AR-7/henry survival rifle to bother with one.

I am more familiar with the Model 70P, the original Papoose- black corrosion resistant finished Aluminum reciever, wood stock, blued barrel than the new Synthetic, Silver Aluminum and stainless 70 PSS. There seems to be a preference for the wood stock, slightly heavier rifles among many individuals, in fact some folks believe insist on the older rifles, because they are percieved as being more reliable. They are also a little cheaper. Excellent condition, you can pick one up for a $175. My experiences with the 70P have been that they are reliable rifles. That said, the bolt lock on the 70 PSS is definetely easier than the 70P. On the 70P you have to retract the bolt, push the bolt charging handle in. Pull it out and let it go to be able to fire. The new system has the easier trigger guard mounted latch.

Don't by the 15 round metal stick mags they sell on Gunbroker. They are ****. They often won't fit magwells properly, and they don't feed right when they do. There is hi-cap synthetic Marlin mags in 15 and 25 round flavors. They will run you about $50- it's a bit of a functional investment- kind of like a machine gun. One cavaet- make sure the nib on the back of the mag isn't chipped if you buy one of the synthetic ones.

Also, by a couple back-up wrenches. You can easily screw the barrel on by hand or with a coin, but it's nice to have the wrench. Periodically check the barrel to make sure it didn't loosen.

The Papoose is a decent rifle. Some people do alledge the 70PSS of having some reliability problems. My experience with the 70P has been good.

oh yeah, the best of the carry all , break downs, accurate and reliable, and tons of mags to go with them. Also , if you want something finer, go with the Majestic arms break down. they take a henry receiver, super tune it, then add the rest , of all their own parts, stocks, bbls, etc. more money, but super light, and super accurate, and breaks down real small.
 
Yes it's a .22 but it's from a rifle. .22 terminal ballistics from a rifle are much improved over handguns using the same cartridges.

I've been perfectly happy with mine. I have a Millet red dot on it to make it easier to slip into its case. It's been consistent and reliable at the ranges I've tried it, 50 yards and under. My other Marlin .22 is a 795 so it worked out to share magazines. Thumbs up from me.

Rangerruck- I appreciate the advice. And I wish we could afford that rifle. Sounds really cool. We just happen to both be students, so...you know, tight budget and all.
Grimjaw- Yeah, I am not worried about the terminal ballistics. As long as she has a rifle. I will be able to carry stopping calibers (x39, and 12ga), but this way she also has something. I wouldn't want to get hit with a .22, and it can provide suppression fire if nothing else. I'd just use the sights that are on it for weight saving purposes. Thank you for the advice.
 
I too am looking for a papoose. Anyone know where they are sold in the Houston, TX area? I have looked for one locally but have not been able to find one yet.

I miss my 70p,:( I have a ar-7 it look's cool but it suck's,worst 22 I ever own.:cuss:
my 70p was very reliable I had a 25rn mag and it shot very reliable every time.One time I fell down a hill and lost my ramp for rear sight but other than that, well let me just say I miss my marlin 70p:(

P.S. I just got done looking at gun brocker.com and the two 70p I saw was missing the rear ramp on the rear sight,but the stainless model has a diffrent rear sight look's better than the old style.

How is the forewood attached?
The only thing I wish I could improve on my wood/blue papoose is the trigger pull.
It's a little heavier then my other .22's.
 
Marlin 70P

I just picked up an older model (wood stock) at a pawn shop. No barrel wrench, case, manual, or OEM magazine. It did come with a 20rnd plastic "banana" magazine that was made by Marlin. I am going to try and find a couple of stock magazines for it while building a soft case for it. I figure it is the right size for my ruck and could also fit behind the seat of my car if need be. It was a fluke that I found it. It doesn't have the forestock, but I can deal with that. I have thought about getting a small scope and a spare barrel, but am in no rush.

19-3 Ben & Matt D., I paid about $175 for mine. Not a bad price for the convience of a take-down plinker that is good for gathering small game. Y'all could always take a day to map out and visit pawnshops in and around where you live. Some places might put it on hold for you if you call and tell them you are on your way to buy it. Best of luck in your search.
 
it is fabulous; they are great, the best of the takedowns really. Oh sure, there are older, or more expensive, but basicallly it is a marlin mod 60 or 795, mag fed, with a supershort forearm. since it is like the two above, it is very accurate, and reliable. get the one that is stainless, with the black synth stock. You can find them new for about 175, and they are worth every penny. you can also find hi cap mags for it; the origional hi cap version was called the 70 hc, and came with 15 and 25 round mags, I think. there are aftermarket hi cap mags as well, they are usually pretty well working, but you could get a dog. Usually to fix it is just a matter of correctly bending the feed lips.
 
Academy's and wallmarts, both sell, the papoose...wallyworld you will proly have to order it, Academy usually allways carries a few. that one it the pic above, has a forestock, they don't do that anymore, not in a long time. that is a very nice one, it also has a full metal plate, surrounding the triggerguard area and magwell, not sure if they do that anymore either.
I would still rather have a stainless/synth one though, especially for the purpose of bugout. Try to find yourself , on auction sites, marlin 70 p bags, or 70 hc bags, they are tailor made to carry these in.
 
I have the 70PSS and like it. The storage bag is supposed to float with the rifle in it, and it doesn't look at all like a gun of any sort while it is in the bag other than the fact it has Marlin printed on it in big letters. It will fit inside any normal duffel bag or full sized pack, a bit too long for most day packs without sticking out of the top. A great bug-out rifle option.

Mine has a Bushnell Trophy red & green dot on it. Pretty accurate and more reliable than either my Buckmark or Ruger Mk III pistols. I use the 10-round mags which I bought from Marlin. Barrel tightening ring will loosen after a hundred rounds or so if you just hand tighten it.

I'd buy another if I found one for under $200 used.
 
I have an older blued & wood stocked Papoose. The one I have is reliable and more than accurate enough to take small game and have fun plinking with.

I have an older 70P and love it. If I was limited to only one .22 for the rest of my life, I'd pick the Papoose without hesitation.
 
I have a stainless Papoose and enjoy it.

I also have a Kel-tec Sub2000. They are both accurate, reliable firearms.

If it fits into your budget, the Kel-Tec may be the better choice for your application.

Even smaller when folded, light, and shoots a more powerful cartridge.

Can't go wrong with either though.
 
I really enjoy my Paposse. Since I took this photo, I've tapped the rear sight over to the right. I've got the Scope & Iron Sights dead on for 50 yards. Mine never jams. Shoots very accurately and is super fun when you don't feel like picking up brass of your centerfires. $106...used w/ no scope or bag.

I have an original 70P Papoose and like the other posters I have not been happy with aftermarket plastic high capacity magazines but the original 7-round metal mags (I have an extra one) have never missed a beat. I would not feel at all uncomfortable with the Papoose and a box of 200 CCI Stingers in a SHTF scenario.

I have never mounted a scope on mine--I always figured the zero would move around when detaching and reattaching the barrel. Has anyone had any trouble with the zero moving around on a scoped Papoose? Has anyone found a good way to mount a red dot or other sight on the barrel to avoid that problem?

I've got a red dot on mine and it seems to hold zero fine...I don't target shoot but offhand golfballs are easy targets out to 30 yards or so.
 
Mounting scope

New here, this thread was fowarded by a friend that I had sent photos of my old Marlin to. Had never been able to have "perfect" return to zero with scope mounted to receiver. Shoot Contenders and some other things with scopes mounted to barrels and they hold zero when changed out. Took a dove tail cutter and milled cuts in barrel for tip off mounts and used a Weaver 1.5 X 4 power handgun scope. Mounts to barrel like it would on the receiver over where the rear sight is. Works great and holds zero even if barrel nut gets a little loose. I only hand tighten, never use wrench. Also use the factory regular clips. Never been a large cap fan, nothing wrong with them, I just like the shorter ones. Barrel has been recrowned and shoots 4 different brands of High velocity ammo into the same 1" group at 35 yards. Eley will make a 3/8"hole at that range. Not bad for a take down gun. Wish it was a mini bolt action, with action under 4", working on that.
